I always thought that was incredibly stupid. I imagine your feet being pinned against the windshield and your knees being forcibly driven up to where the sun visor rests while your pelvis is still restrained by the lap belt. Your legs would be forcibly disassociated from your pelvis. So cute.

EDIT: as someone who has experienced the joy of multiple complex fractures of the hand followed by reconstructive surgery with external fixation and rehab, I can say that the entire experience was unpleasant, and I suggest avoiding it if you are able to.
My allergist's office is on the 6th floor a big medical building, and to get to it, I walk past the office of a hand surgeon. I shudder every time.

Everybody has seen the old vet on Antiques Roadshow who found out he has a $700k Rolex he paid $350 for back in the 70's... the following story just happened to me this week...
3 parts to this story...
PART 1: Parents bought me this upon graduation from college summer '98. It sat at home for 2 years while I was working for Club Med but I started wearing it again in flight school. I wore it all the way through my first sea-duty and instructor tour (about 10 years) when it stopped working. It's sat in a shoebox filled with old junk, dull knives, random crap since about 2010.
PART 2: At some point last year I made a joke to my Dad about loving his classic Seiko Diver and was patiently waiting to inherit it. Then at Christmas time, a new one appears in my stocking. Then last month my parents come to visit and conversation rolls around to my new watch and how much I like it and my Mom comments "Too bad about your Rolex"... to which I reply, "What do you mean?". Since they hadn't seen it in 10 years, they assumed I lost it... so I dug into the back of my closet and found it. It was like I brought out a 3rd grandchild for them.
PART 3: My Dad insisted on getting it serviced for me... which I was very much in favor of because the last service was about $400. So they take it and send it back in the mail... arrived just a few days ago. And I called my parents and thanked them... and then she told me that I needed to get it insured. I never had thought about insuring it because I figured it was only worth a couple thousand and the deductible wouldn't make sense and every service was $400 and it would just sit there until one of my kids found it after I was dead. So I did a little homework...
1982 Rolex GMT-Master 16750... ******* thing is worth $12k-$15k... and is now insured.
