For drag racers, it is common to weld a sump onto the rear-bottom of the fuel tank, in order to ensure that the pickup tube remains submerged at all times. It is important for this work to be done carefully in order to prevent leakage.

The rainbow miata image I'm thinking of is of a miata trackday (many miatas on the track) with a rainbow photoshopped in the background...which...is really not much different than the image you posted.
