Thank you. I will take the tips into consideration.

And here's my completely n00b review:

fat tire = best of the 3. absolutely delish. love this stuff. after my 1st one a week ago I can't get enough of it.
guiness black lager = not bad. bold. would drink again.
guiness draught = not a fan. its got some interesting taste to it, but its a bit bitter and has an aftertaste I'm not too fond of. will probably not drink again.

another one I tried is downtown brown = love it about as much as fat tire.

I'm starting to develop a taste for this stuff and figure out what I prefer. PROGRESS:party:

Picked up a case of Williamsburg Alewerks Pumpkin Ale. Very nice pumpkin.

This last weekend...

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...1&d=1351566663

Ace Hard Pumpkin Cider 5% ABV

OMGSWEET! I bought a 6 pack of this to try it out as my first "seasonal beer" and brought it to a party. This stuff was so sweet that only the hardcore soda drinkers could handle it. It had some spices in it but honestly, my pallet was blasted by the almost cloying sweetness. We tried to use it up by making Snakebites out of it (50/50 stout and cider) using a homebrew LostCoast 8Ball clone, but it was just... too much. I came home with 3 unopened bottles.

Innis & Gunn Rum Cask Ale 7.4% ABV

RUM! Its in the nose, its in the finish, its in the body... but its not overpowering unless your pallet is completely clean. This is probably a very midrange scottish ale before it went into the rum casks. Its on the lighter end body wise for its ABV and it pulls it off well. I expected this to be very sweet (because rum) but that is not entirely the case. Id recommend pairing it with something with strong, robust flavors. I'd avoid pork or chicken though, just does not seem like it would work very well. Hell, I'm no cicerone, what do I know?

Unibroue Éphémère Pomme 5.5% ABV

Apple deliciousness and all kinds of spicy going on. I was slightly disturbed by the green apple aroma that came pouring off this brew but it turned out pretty damn good. I was expecting sharp tartness of a cider or overpowering coriander and spices but it turned out very soft and mellow. Its definitely brewed with a belgian yeast. Its VERY prevalent in the bottle so it you do not like the yeast, do not disturb! The first pour was very clean with the apple totally overpowering the beer flavors, while the second pour had some of the belgan yeastyness that I come to expect from bottles with corks in them. The flavors changed from appley to slightly more beery as it warmed up in the glass with some yeast in the nose. Defiantly pair this with some sort of white meat like pork. The fiancee really enjoyed this one.

Chatoe Rogue Dirtoir Black Lager

Black Lager kinda seems like a misnomer. I guess its a lager because its clean? Did not have any typical ale "fruity" flavors as one expects with the Pacman yeast Rogue seems to use in everyfuckingthing. This had a very dense, dark head and a lot of dark and earthy flavors in the nose. Fiancee described it as having "earthy dirtlike scent." No hops that I could really identify but good balanced to mellow bitterness. Very rich chocolate, coffee and caramel notes from the malts but not burnt or bitter. It left a persistent finish in the mouth and a brown mustache on the Fiancee. Like most dark beers, if you serve it cold, let it warm a bit in the glass. Very drinkable. She loved it, I was "meh."

Ace Joker Hard Cider 6.9 ABV

Very basic dry cider, not particularly sweet at all. Had a good head on it and the carbonation was kind of sharp. Had the tartness I expect from an english style hard cider. Better than Strongbow IMO.

Auburn Alehouse Rye Not? ~5ish% ABV

(Stopped here on the way back from Reno and had this on tap. I REALLY wanted their Oktoberfest Marzen but they ran their whole production run dry in something like 3 days. Sad panda)
Woahhhh! HOPS! and christ they are proud of them. It gives you a one-two punch of a huge dry citrus and spicy hops (amarillo? cascade? centennial?) aroma in the nose and then follows it with a really solid hop bitterness. The website claims this is a wheat brewed with 25% rye, but really it tastes like an overstimulated IPA with a little bit of rye and nowhere near enough malt to back up the bitter. This is probably one of the most unbalanced beers I've ever tasted. Order this with a cheeseburger rather than the carved turkey sandwich I selected before I tasted this beer. It was served in a neat pint glass with a hop cone laser etched in the bottom to provide nucleation points for the steady stream of hop aroma that poured out of this beer, and it never ran out of aroma. If your looking for a hop-bomb, this is it.

Auburn Alehouse Gold Country Pilsner ~5ish% ABV

Fiancee ordered this. It tasted like a super mellow super clean pilsner. Its booked as a "pre-Prohibition pilsner" and it fits the part. This went WAY better with my turkey sammich than the Rye Not? did. I can't give solid comments on this due to my pallet being swamped with bitter and hops from my beer. She really liked it.

Ommegang Art of Darkness 8.9% ABV

No idea, have not opened this one yet

Tonight...

Dogfish Head 90 Minute Imperial IPA 9% ABV

Ohh lawdy, this is a fabulous beer! Its definitely an Imperial IPA but its so well balanced that its frighteningly easy drinking. Like, far easier than anything with this amount of hops ever should be. They say "balanced by a ridiculous amount of English 2 row barley" on the label and it must be true based on the 9% ABV. Serve it too cold and you loose a lot of the subtle flavors with this one. This is one of those beers that I just want to keep drinking. I think I may be spoiled on anything even claiming to be an IIPA from now on.

I'm interested if anyone has any additional comments for any of these brews. I think I'd be willing to try any of them again, other than maybe the Ace Pumpkin Cider.

Prosit!

Hmm, cant believe I missed this thread. Well since Im sitting here trying to gather up the strength to do early voting since I am coughing up a lung and feel chills all over my body, I might as well chime in. Ive been trying all sorts of stuff for the last couple of years. For a blonde lager I like Zywiecs. Great taste from such an ordinary looking beer. Belgian ale, I had a huge hard on for Urthel Hoppit but I seem to have lost the taste for it. Maybe it was the Lagunitas Red that killed it. Thats some nice beer there from the left coast but we ran out of supply at my local bar about a month ago. Ran out of Lil Sumpin too. Of course now for the holidays I will have my share of Delirium Noel. That beer has such good color and smell and the taste is so warming. Too bad I live in SoFla to really enjoy it but if I really wanted to feel the winter I could just turn my AC down to 60 I guess. Now is also the time for the coffee and chocolate beers too. I havent had one in a while but there was a Brit coffee ale, I think its Bulldog? that stuck in my mind. I dont like stouts or IPA's as the after taste is just too bitter so I mainly stick to hoppy ales or lagers.

And then after I try all that stuff I come back to Sam Adams Boston Lager. Beautiful color, smell, taste and it goes with everything I like to eat. And I think "why the hell do I drink anything else?"

thirdgen 11-03-2012 11:27 AM

Lol...I had only a few Sam Adams products a few years ago. They made me not too fond of Sam Adams. That was years ago though. Then sam adams bought a brewery about 20 minutes from me. They actually make some decent beer. I recently had a Boston lager and I was like "wow! This stuff is really good!"
My always go to beer is Yuengling lager. It's brewed like 15 minutes from my house and has always been my all time favorite.

I'm no pro at reviewing, but i love me some beer.

Victory Prima - Gross. Absolutely disgusting.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1351957230

Breckenridge Brewery Avalance - DELICIOUS.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1351957230

Shock Top Pumpkin Wheat - This is probably what EO2K should have tried instead of his pumpkin soda. This was awesome. Hints/aftertastes/smells of pumpkin, but not overpowering. Really well done.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1351957230

Founders Dirty Bastard - This shit was like a meal, but soooooooo good. Dark, rich, thick, you feel like a man drinking this shit.

Those were from the past couple days... here's some past beers that i happened to have pictures of.

O'Fallon Smoke - This was good... but wouldn't drink it often. Had STRONG tastes of smoked sausage in it. Which... wasn't a bad thing, but STRANGE in a drink.
Newcastle Summer Ale - Nope. Stick with Newcastle Brown. You'll thank me later.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1351957659

Rogue Red Ale - I like Reds in general, but sometimes hate how "flat" and "syrupy" they can get. This was neither of those things. Solid 8/10 beer.
Banana Bread Beer! - Interesting... nowhere near as sweet as i was expecting, and that's a good thing. I'd drink it again, but wouldn't seek it out.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1351957659

Delerium Tremens - I wanted to like this beer a lot more. I couldn't REALLY fault it (other than maybe being a bit... dry), but it just didn't live up to the hype or price for me. That said, i could definitely notice the high-ish alc/v content. Nothing special about it otherwise. Pretty light, refreshing, inoffensive beer.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1351957659

Samuel Adams Alpine Spring - Holy FUCK this was delicious. I bought two cases of it and drank it nonstop until it was gone. If you like wheats, try this.

Screw that shock top shiz. Props on the wells banana bread and the dirty bastard scotch ale. Breckinridge...I'm drinking an oatmeal stout from Breckinridge right now. Try their vanilla porter.
I like a lot of victory products but the prima pils is not one of them.

I liked the Shock Top for what it was... good thing that being it's pumpkin, i won't have to drink it year round, but i'll rock a 6 pack or two each holiday season i think. :)

I'll definitely try Breckenridge's Vanilla Porter, thanks for the tip!

hector 11-03-2012 12:19 PM

I had the banana bread beer and that was my impression also. Not overwhelming in any way, just a sublime hint of the flavor. Wasnt bad but one was enough. Cant remember the brand that had a raisin beer. It may have been Dogfish that was sort of the same way. Newcastle had a limited Werewolf red ale that was pretty good. Needless to say I loved the color. I would like the english ales more but they start out really tasty and then just end up flat, not hoppy at all. Theakston (cant remember the variety) is one that I seemed to like more than the rest. Tremens is nice, no doubt. The Nocturnum I find too sweet. The Noel is heaven. Good thing you can only drink so much of it as it would spoil the experience. The wife really likes it too so its something I can enjoy with her other than Lambics. Not that I dont like Lambics of course. =)

Thirdgen, Sam Adams Boston Lager is my favorite. It has it all and is inexpensive and readily available. Yeungling just doesnt have the flavor, finish for me. If they dont have Sam, I get the Yling and pretend by looking at the color Im drinking a Sam Adams but I can only fool myself for so long.=) Wife is making pizza tonight and I would prolly drink a six pack of Sam but I dont think I could handle it with this flu I have. Of course my dad says that when you are sick you should treat it with alcohol as germs cant live in alcohol. Considering he drinks a six pack of Becks a night and he hardly gets sick, its kinda tough to argue with his logic.

thirdgen 11-03-2012 01:14 PM

I'm never sick either...I wonder why. Too little blood in my alcohol content maybe?
I also realized...if I spent as much time and money wrenching on my car as I do on beer...I'd have the fastest car on miataturbo.net! There ya go boy's... I drink cause I don't like to steal other people's thunder.

concealer404 11-03-2012 01:20 PM

I have the opposite problem. I don't drink nearly enough because all my money goes into these damn cars.

y8s 11-03-2012 09:42 PM

how can you not like victory prima pils?? that is one of the better craft pilseners out there. i rate it high right up there with Oskar Blues Mama's Little Yella Pils.

Tonight I had:
PEAK ESPRESSO AMBER (Cold-Infused w/ Local, Organic Coffee)
Peak Organic Brewing Company | American Amber Ale | Maine | 6.8% |Goblet | 12 oz

SCYTHE & SICKLE (Brewed w/ Barley, Wheat, Oats & Rye)
Brewery Ommegang | Belgian Pale Ale | New York | 5.8% | Goblet | 12 oz

The first one was OK. Decent ale but seemed as if someone poured cold coffee into it. Strange.

The second was good but nothing special.

I had a sip of my wife's and it was delicious and very smooth:
THE POET
New Holland Brewing Company | Oatmeal Stout | Michigan | 5.2 % | Pint | 16 Oz.

thirdgen 11-03-2012 09:53 PM

New holland makes dragons milk...that is some solid shit.
