Better than our master techs day. He blew up a brand new shortblock in an oil consumption car yesterday when he didn't clean the oil pick up out and sent metal through the motor, has to replace the entire motor out of his own pocket. Sad part is he has all the subaru schooling and ases to be the master tech but regularly ***** things up when he doesn't think things through. Say goodbye to 10k and all the time it takes him to rebuild that motor.

Called Roadside Assist and sent Outback to dealer.

yeah it should bw like 40-50$ worth of parts and 2 hours of labor. Thats what my dealership charges.

If I'm looking at a new Focus RS, should I also consider an STi?

Are the engines/pistons still garbage or ?

I was at the dealership this morning to get the oil and transmission fluid changed in the BRZ and was checking out the STi's. It was early so no sales guys were there for me to sit in one or take it for a test drive (apparently NO Ford dealers will let you test drive an RS).

Upgraded brakes, and DCCD tuning and is now all electric operation.

Do the ECU's have counters? So I could I put on a tune, then take it back to stock for service and they wouldn't be able to tell? What would it need to live for the occasional track day?

FYI, I've heard of a few around me that will let you test drive, and a few that won't. Seems to be based on who you end up talking to.

Why is that? Turbo cars are one of the few things I'm leary on buying used because who knows what bro beat the hell out of it with a shitty tune and returned it to stock before selling or similar.

And for some reason STi's seem to hold their value pretty well, especially considering how few miles mine would see.

I just sold mine back to the dealer recently (13' STI Ltd) to help finance the shop. I loved the car and it killed me to get rid of it, but being the Jew that I am the depreciation was a hard pill to swallow (roughly 10k for a car with 60k miles).

My stable now consists of 5 used cars that all total didn't reach the cost of my new STI. I'll wait until I see a GR pop up with a blown motor and get in to one on the cheaps if I do that again.

Things I don't like about the 15+ STi

-they fixed none of the actual issues from previous years. they still pop engines left and right
-its heavier, and much bulkier
-seating position sucks, you're sitting on top of the car instead of in it
-ergo sucks, feels completely like a prius with how everything is placed and shaped, and I'm not even slightly exaggerating
-the move to electric diffs is, in my opinion, a terrible cost cutting exercise disguised as an "improvement"
-the neon green brake calipers look absolutely silly, esp on the less flashy colors. ricey in many cases
-the suspension, while better handling, is absolutely nuts stiff for daily driving

Things I like:
-they finally went back to aluminum hoods instead of saving money there too
-they definitely improved suspension valving and steering rack ratio for track use
-I like how they look with a few mild and tasteful mods

40 grand is, in my opinion, highway robbery

I think a fully loaded sti limited is 43-44.
My mustang was 43 with change new, also with all options except navi.

Most of the cost of the mustang is the super awesome 5L coyote engine, whereas the fubaru still uses the 1990's parts so I can only imagine their profit from each car

Yes, but is you pay MSRP you deserve it. There are two Subaru dealers in the OKC area. One has an '18 STi Limited listed at $4k off MSRP. Reading on NASIOC and IWSTI guys were ordering them earlier this year at under invoice. Even at invoice on a Limited there is still like another $1400 in dealer holdbacks, IIRC. So paying anything more than invoice is someone just being a lazy buyer.

As for seating/ergo, I felt the same about the Focus RS I sat in.

I don't mind about the suspension, my car only sees about 150 miles of commuting per month as it is. The weight sucks, but that's all new cars, even the new Mustang is up over 3800lbs now.

As far as the engine, is it basically guys beating the **** out of them on poor tunes/crap mods? People were blowing up stock BRZ motors at AutoX and track as well. Then guys with FI and quality tunes are having no issues after thousands of miles. It seems like a quality tune that isn't on the ragged edge and quality fluids is about all you need? Later on get an AOS and ELH?

Also reading the '18s are putting down 15-20whp more than 15-17 stock?

The 15's put down a few extra ponies due to a slightly more aggressive tune. I bet it's similar story with the 18. The OEM tune is dog crap. Utter dog crap.

Most people pop them from improper maint, but not all. There've been several cases that I saw firsthand where car was treated perfectly and still took a dump.

Proper tune (read: not off the shelf map) and proper care using proper parts/fluids would probably give you a very high chance of failure avoidance. But who cares, in 2 weeks you'll be eyeing the next car you're considering

Doomsday is fast approaching. First round of RSU's vest on Feb 2nd, so I should be buying something in the next 30-45 days. I've had the BRZ just over 3 years, and the next car I purchase I'd like to keep even longer. That's why I'm so torn on what to get next.

Not one single person under the sun knows definitively outside subaru. We just have speculation and rumors.
Cobb did confirm several times that while digging through the thousands of lines of code, they did not see a single thing like that anywhere in the ecu.
I just recently tuned a 16 sti that needed to go back in for a bunch of recalls and some warranty work. We unmarried the accessport and no one said anything.

Gotcha, I know on the BRZ, if you tune with OFT and take it back to stock they can't see it. But I believe with ECUTek even if you flash back to stock they can, not sure. My BRZ was caught because I thought I had already flashed back to the stock tune, but apparently hadn't.

In reality, I know there are "better" cars, but I've always dug the STi and it's warbly exhaust. I wanted to buy one back in '06 when I got my first real job after college, but I couldn't afford one then.

I'm definitely with you on not buying a new STI. Though it seems like a ton of people are. I see new STIs multiple times a day, but I only see GD STIs maybe once a week.
A 2011-2014 hatch STI is probably the only one I'd consider besides my 2005.

My friend just bought a '17 s550 with the performance pack and I'm at least 15 kinds of jealous. He basically stole it too (7 year extended warranty got thrown in too), after a full day of arguing with sales guys.
We took it on a very spirited drive in the mountains the night he picked it up and I am now seriously considering getting one to replace my LS400 when I graduate next year lol
