A thought I had...

I don't really like threads in aluminum, and I don't really think helicoil is a long term solution.

But what if we had some captive nuts? I can mill the pockets for a press fit, to make assembly slightly easier. I think that would let us use 3/4 material as well.



The Caliper mounting nut probably doesn't need to be pocketed so deep, as is there's room for .200" of aluminum flange past the pocket, without the nut hitting the rotor.

I'm thinking square nuts, deez ones

I would prefer a full depth flanged insert with a flat, but those are much harder to find.

I was never going to run plastic spacers. Ive said it a few times, im making my own.... out of aluminum. hint- im not chucking 3" round into a hand drill and using a file. I was only answering deezums questions and giving my 0.02 about the concerns.

I have a mig, ive never really discussed anything about welders on this forum, at least not to purchase one.

If I can find insterts alrady made, it would be stupid to make them. If not, ill make them.

The closest makerspace to me is in my garage.

Aluminum rings are in the mail. I actually have access to the machine shop at work. Big *** Bridgeport, decent sized mill, sheet metal tools. I'm just not experienced with them.
<br />Plastic brackets finished printing, hopefully I will get them today, maybe Monday.

I'm not making flange nuts, there's no room for pre-made ones. The point of the square nut is I can get one at ace hardware if the threads ever get messed up, and it simplifies making the brackets. Plus I can buy it for $.30 instead of buying bar stock, turning a nut, and milling a flange. It needs to hold 33 something foot pounds, and that's right inside the range of a 3/8 nut.

There are too many Rtele or relete named guys in this thread, I am confused.

Ace hardware has square head bolts, that might be even better than a hex nut.

Easier assembly, that's about it. The square nuts are sheared, so they aren't very repeatable. Press fitting them is no go, not with ace hardware bits.

Bolts won't fall out the bracket like a nut would. I've seen plenty of failures of aluminum brackets helicoils, and I don't trust aluminum threads.

 

Wondered if anyone would catch that.

 

Peen them over. Just enough to not fall out. Still replaceable if necessary.


I wouldn't either. At least not on brakes. I'm old fashioned that way.
