To put it as simply as I can, when you hinge the spoiler to change the AOA (if that term applies to a splitter? or just airfoils?) and its curved, itll try to transfer the curve from the thin flexible plane to the "width of the material" plane.

She's awesome. Literally the best dog we could have gotten. She is also the laziest animal I have ever met. She is very loving, and likes to cuddle, and for the most part sleeps all night.

We were slightly worried about leaving her alone all day, but my roomate was home all day yesterday and said that she got out of bed twice in 8 hours.

Were having a bit of trouble getting her to eat right now, and we think it might be something to do with some teeth that might be dying. She ate hard treats the first night home, then she ate some turkey, and now she won't touch anything. She'll see a vet tomorrow.

Quietest dog I've ever met, she hasn't barked once, or whined, or anything. She makes a snorting noise when you rub her belly or play with her, almost like purring.

 

Yeah, I think I get it. I've got a couple more ideas.

I think the lexan spoiler is split into three pieces, cut on an intersection curve with the top of the deck lid, up off on an angle to clear the height of the trunk hump. I really don't like how the front screws hold that thing down, but it does mean the lexan is flat the whole length of the hinge.

I was thinking of making some sets of uhmw triangular blocks, fitted to the curve of the trunk instead. Then you could bolt solidly down, not on weird angles.

2 hinges, one on each of the blocks. Some duct tape covering the gap between them?

Some standard AOA on the front of the blocks.

Hope so. Were still in the learning phase with her. She isn't let off the leash unless someone is paying close attention to her and stuff.

The shop is wayyy to dirty right now to let her roam around. Who knows what she would get into.

 

I was mostly just referring to the laziness factor. Every shop dog I have ever seen barely lifts an eyelid when you try to get their attention.

 

Man, you can't steal my slight tweak of a stolen design and start demanding royalties...

But yeah, that's pretty much what I'm thinking. 1" wide UHMW blocks, on center with the adjustable struts.

How big a CNC table do you think you've found?

 

No idea. Just a miata guy I met who calibrates CNC machines for a living. I shot him a text earlier, he was going to ask around.

What is the curvature of the hood back there, doesn't it curve 3 dimensionally? That could be a bitch to machine. Though with a CNC mill maybe not.

+1 for not ripping off blackbirds design.

 

Also, honestly the actual spoiler could be cut by hand. CNC spoiler would be sex, but not necessary. CNC blocks would be baller though. And easily a profitable SADFab item.

 

I think the NB is a lot more dramatic than our cars. As to the curve, with 1" wide blocks I don't think it'd need to be perfect. I imagine most people want a spare deckild anyway, so if it flexes to meet the blocks a bit, oh well.

You ever print a bunch of scaled pages on a printer, then tape it all together. Works, pretty well actually. The same thing works in reverse with a scanner, it's how I made that vent window thing.

 

Would 1 inch wide be enough to get an angle on it and still be able to bolt a hinge to it?

The block has to be 6+inches long to get towards the middle of the trunk from the outside.

How much would that weigh?

Na, I'm thinking 4 blocks so each end of the hinge is supported. That little 6" span will be empty, I don't see any reason to make a solid block because that would be tedious to get just right.

I think I've tried to pull that model into solidworks a few times, but it's way too high polycount for solidworks to work off of. I might be able to cut out the decklid and bring just that in though...

 

For the aero, and ballerness.

 

I don't think we would have to get it exact, just get it to match the trunk lid kind of close.

 

That sounds really fun to machine, doing triangles with an odd non-perpendicular side is hard enough. Making it 6+ inches long and super thin at one end means it's damn near impossible. Guess I could print it and cast it in a hard poly or something.
