I believe with the supertechs you can pull the inner spring out of the doubles and run them as singles, but I'm not sure why you would bother to do it.

Why is the head at the shop? I've lost track of this build since we derailed it with MRLS talk

Oh, I thought you must have measured them, I had the same thought about the 1mm being difficult to eyeball.

G, the head is at the shop because the engine is at the car, of course!

Seriously though... Compression test was low, starting with the head to figure out why.

Sorry, I skimmed. I see it now.

Why is it exactly that we seem to have multiple people with valve seat issues all of a sudden?

Yes. This. I still don't have a satisfactory smoking gun to the 20 hours between head overhauls that I've been enduring.

I'm scared to do a compression check on mine. Been having a rougher idle lately and I'm not sure if it is tune related. Ugh.

Dammit G, how DARE you only skim my thread! STUDY this stuff man!!

To be fair: My car ran perfect before it got a little hot one day (245-250 indicated). After that it still ran well but not quite the same, and when cranking to start it wasn't an even sound.

I never did a compression test before overheating and I didn't do a warm one after but the head gasket looked fine so it had to have been something else.

Wasn't it a trackspeed engine?

At one point, yes. But he had some issues with the TSE engine, and had it re-rebuilt at Pit Garage in LA with wisecos.

So, no, it's not a trackspeed engine.

You can do this with the heavy doubles (the outer spring is the same spring as the Single spring kit), but I wouldn't do it with the light double kit (the outer spring is different).

I'm not sure what happed with Ed's motor at Pit Garage - we were never even contacted before it was rebuilt.

Yeah, I don't have any details on it either. I'm sure you would have taken care of it had the issue been brought to your attention. All I know is the car ran great when I got it, and there was a box with used Supertechs that came with the car.

Andrew, so you know if oil jets went in originally? As far as I've heard from Ed who's heard from the PO, it was rebuilt for oil consuption issues.

From Josh:

"So head was warped .014", which is pretty significant. You also had a number of valves leaking, as my bench test showed. He wants the cams and the caps brought to him tomorrow for further evaluation. Sounds like if the cam journals aren't straight, or are too warped to be straightened, the head will be scrapped.

Sorry this isn't better news. If I were you I'd email Andrews, ask him what the max "out of straight" tolerance for cam bores is, and what he might suggest? Worth a shot."

I don't think I want VVT anyway.

I found some reman options for under $500 so going to see if they're available. I don't really want a used head simply because I've already got one of those and it's no good.

Why not? It's a better head and your ms can control it.
