Same thing happened to me. Its a really fucking stupid design. Magnacore claims thats the only terminal that works with those boots. But I'm going to try out another one to see if we can get something better. For now I crimped down a stock wire so it fits on the GM coil.

What wires do you have? Who made them? I have a set of FM magnacore wires and they have been great the last 3-5 years. The big reason I went that route is cost was not to bad($100), but they have a lifetime warranty on them. So if something does go wrong, I simply call magnacore and they will make me some new good ones. They will also make custom wires for a reasonable price, I think it was between $80-$120 based on lengths and such.

aidandj 05-17-2017 11:46 AM

Its the 90* terminal thats the issue. They use a material for the terminal that breaks if you look at it sideways.

I got my coil ends from Summit. I can't recall the brand but they are in my build thread. I put them on stock Miata wires with no problems. I'd search but I'm on the mobile app right now.

psyber_0ptix 05-22-2017 07:37 PM

So just a quick update.

Two of the 4 plug wires where cracked at the 90°. In the interim some Escalade cables were purchased from NAPA and seem to be doing the job for now. There is one more problem after the last session it was all dialed in at 402whp, the engine was running well. It wasn't until they tried to dial in the low load idle and enrichment that the car would lean out and sound like a little rough, but not full on Subaru.

They did another leakdown, it was awesome.
They replaced the coil, no change.

After a bunch of output test things, it was determined that one of the injectors may have become clogged or is bum. It's flowing some fuel, but is inconsistent at idle. Free revving it seems to be ok, sounds healthy, but the concern is that the cylinder would lean out under load, so they fired the alarms and recommended they be sent out for inspection. They said they shut down cylinders when running and cylinder 3 had little effect whether it was contributing or not, whereas any other would cause the engine to struggle significantly. Imagine it running at 3.5 cylinders versus 2.5 cylinders.

I asked them to probe the EV14 connector, but because it's still actuating, just not flowing very well, I can agree with the logic. So in other news....

I finally just barely made it into the 400 club. I can no longer daily my miata, and am on the hunt for a new daily. Currently scoping out a Mazda3 for a car I won't want to modify. My girlfriends CX-3 is so comfy. I'll be shopping around this week. It was cheaper for me to rent a car for the week than to uber every where (it costs $27 each way to get to work)

Sadness. (Because this prolongs my K-swap dream financially)

One of the curious things is that it seems the EFR is choking. I wonder if it's the 2" outlet pipe to the intercooler. I swapped the high boost canister, but it doesn't want to make more than maybe 28psi. Even at 100% duty cycle. Trying to think of other things, otherwise perhaps the last phase is a ported head with wild cams. Maybe this is where Smurfette's BP journey ends and I'll ring it out until it's done.

This may also mean that if I get a different car, I may FINALLY be ditching A/C. Lulwhut

aidandj 05-22-2017 07:42 PM

I have a new set of terminals on order that should hopefully solve the broken terminal issue. We will keep you updated.

That'd be awesome. The escalade wires are working real well but dont seal up top. Otherwise it'd be an off the shelf solution for those in a bind.

So....

I buckled and got a more seater car to use as backup/roadtrips. It's a brand new Mazda3 Grand Touring and it has all these lights and makes beeping noises and is confusing. But I got 5000 off MSRP after loyalty, first time car buyer, rebate/cashback offers, and military+usaa discount. This is a car I won't have the motivation to modify but it's so quiet, I forget to shift. It is fun, better than most economy rentals, but I still miss the miata :) :/

I can now transport more parts to the machine shop, like k24's and find transmissions at junk yards!

turbofan 05-27-2017 12:39 PM

Congrats, and great choice. Helluva deal at $5k off MSRP.

Manual hatch with the premium package?

If it won't make > 28 PSI in the midrange when it first spools up, I bet it's a wastegate issue, you're blowing the gate open.

Red, 6MT, premium and i-activesense. It's comfy, but it definitely strikes me as the drive slow and steady car. I can't wait to get back into the miata

I wonder what it could be then. Maybe I got a defective high boost canister? I'll investigate later once fueling woes are sorted.

turbofan 05-27-2017 03:32 PM

Ah, Activsense too. I don't care for the lane departure and braking but man, radar cruise is sweeeeet.

Yeah, contrary to the belief of some, the 3 is not a sports car. It is a comfy, engaging daily driver that gets great mileage, looks awesome, hauls tons of stuff, and requires very little maintenance.

plus, i LOVE the feel of the new steering wheel in the 2017 models, and heated steering wheel is the sweetness.

It's an internal gate, so you have to setup the preload and whatnot. Plus internal gates are not known for excellent boost control. I assume it's not a dual port can? If it's not, I bet you're blowing the gate open.

Also, congrats on 400whp! I bet it's a riot.

ADVICE NEEDED - Terminate services with tuner?

It's definitely a single port, BW canister. I have been on the fence about the Turbosmart dual port since there where some issues I was reading which was resolved by proper alignment I suppose. I haven't tried to amend the tension as I still have not taken delivery on my car....which brings me to a bit of a dilemma.

It's been a long time that the car has been at the shop. I'll continue to support the work done by PTuning and the customer service is fantastic. But for the 10 weeks it's been over there, I feel like this is now a back burner project unless there's something seriously wrong and they aren't coming forward.

Late May 22 it was decided to clean out the injectors to help with idle woes. June 17, I seek an update and they said that the injectors where cleaned and idle needs to be adjusted. Two weeks ago, July 6, I was given the message that all that needed to be done was

one final idle adjustment to make then to street test it and it should be ready for pick up shortly.
I call in today, July 20, and no further update or even a rough time frame. Still need to do the street verification of both 93pump and e85. I know it's been an uphill battle on both ends, and it is that busy season and I'm not the only car with problems. But there are a couple folks getting stuff done and tuning projects are being pounded out and I wonder how long idle adjustments and a street verification takes since there has been no eta for completion of services. Is it because trying to get everything to play nice with a flex sensor is inherently more complex?

I miss my car, though I want it done right. I missed a couple track opportunities, dyno days and will be missing Miatas at the Gap. I just wonder if they are jaded with this project to move forward, or if I should continue giving benefit of the doubt.
Conflicted because all other experiences have been top notch. I spread a lot of word to the local community about their tunes as my previous was great. Should I be making plans to drop it off somewhere else? Maybe it's time to connect with Vlad on his remote tuning? Perhaps I just need to be more patient?

edit:
So far the things I have planned when I get the car back is changing the hotside piping to 2.25", adjusting the preload to the wastegate canister and installing some fresh rubber floor mats.

Then I need to pull the bumper and decide if I want to keep the A/C or start chopping stuff up and learning how to box that radiator.

18psi 07-20-2017 12:23 PM

wait............wut?

I thought this whole time you are enjoying your car. that's insane

Unless this thing is plagued with all sorts of crazy one-off issues, you coulda had it tuned, like 60 times over by now

psyber_0ptix 07-20-2017 12:27 PM

Yea....sometimes I wonder if someone stole my seats and they are trying to find a replacement

I may be pinging you about what you charge to glance over the tune if you're willing. After this, I want another set of eyes on it. I'm still stumped about that "won't boost more than" problem.

18psi 07-20-2017 12:33 PM

No problem dude. After this much time, their tune better be "out of this world awesome" lol

psyber_0ptix 07-20-2017 06:13 PM

I'm really starting to get down about this cold shoulder stuff. I know it may sound as though I'm hounding them for an update once every week or two, but it's been sitting at the "verify, pick it up soon" stage for nearly a month. I may really need to consider just retrieving the car and seek services elsewhere from now on. I just want a hard date of completion; whether it's a week or two.

Missed MachV Dyno Day
Two Summit FATT
Moss Motors meetup
I'll be missing Miatas at the Gap
whatever other stuff comes up, I'm sure I'll miss that too at this point.

I've forfeit my summer with this flex sensor mumbo-jumbo.

psyber_0ptix 07-28-2017 03:05 PM

Car is done! I'll be taking delivery on Sunday after this rain curtain stops.
