Va. mom charged after firing gun into air to scare off daughter's attackers - Washington Times

A Woodbridge woman was arrested after she shot a handgun into the air to scare off a group of boys who were attacking her daughter.

Lakisha Gaither, 35, said she fired a single round into the sky from her legally owned gun Saturday night after a boy punched her daughter in the face during a dispute near their home.

Students Hurt In Accidental Shooting By Cop At School Safety Event Near Los Angeles

Three California elementary school students were wounded in an allegedly accidental shooting with a police weapon at a safety demonstration on Wednesday, the Los Angeles Times reported.

An officer's gun discharged and no one was hit by an errant bullet, according to the Associated Press. But it unleashed a murky chain of events that left the three youngsters with cuts and scrapes.

IMPORTANT INFO - PLEASE READ! ESPECIALLY BEFORE COMMENTING ON THE RELEVANT LAWS! IF YOU PLAN TO TAKE A SHOT AT MY LEGAL ANALYSIS WITHOUT READING THIS INFO AND MY BRIEF, YOU WILL GET OWNED!

This video shows an attempt I made on 8-24-13 to get a ticket from an illegally unmarked Washington State Patrol car in order to settle the issue of their illegality for patrol in court. Click here for my downloadable brief that fully explains the legalities of the issue: http://www.mediafire.com/view/?wblu1123764u779...

Also see this news story about my previous case: http://www.salem-news.com/articles/s...ed-victory.php...

If you have an unmarked car case of your own, you can print that brief and take it to court with you. You can also contact me to see what I can do to help you prepare for your case.

Make no mistake, the use of unmarked cars for patrol in Washington is ILLEGAL, whether done by the State Patrol or a city or county department, and any ticket issued from one is invalid. Just make sure to read the brief that's linked to above before trying this at home. There are different marking requirements for different types of departments that you'll need to know the details of.

State Patrol cars used for traffic patrol are required to have an identifying sticker in the rear window, and an official plate. (That includes the fully marked cars, which seldom have the sticker anymore.)

City and county cars are required to have lettering or a logo on the sides.

In the case of the State Patrol, they rely on the exemption in the law for "traffic control vehicles." In short, "traffic control vehicles" have yellow lights and are for CONTROLLING traffic in work or accident zones. They are NOT the same thing as traffic enforcement vehicles and their use of that exemption is a fraud. That exemption also does not cover the official plate requirement, which is separate from the marking requirement.

This issue is far more serious than improper tickets. Marking requirements were enacted so the public would have a way to identify that they are being stopped by a real police car and not an impersonator. Page 11 of the brief details incidents of impersonators who have robbed, raped, and murdered in this state.

If you would like to make an inquiry with a WSP official who is aware of this issue and has discussed it with me, you can write to: Robert.Calkins@wsp.wa.gov To read my own conversation with him, which ends in the same way as all these conversations do, click here: http://www.mediafire.com/view/6plk6t...CalkinsWSP.doc...

SPECIAL OFFER TO LAW ENFORCEMENT!

As you're aware, what I want is to settle these issues in court so we can all have clarity. If you'll agree to write me the tickets I need, (for non-hazardous seatbelt violations) I'll agree to take this video down. I need one from WSP, from a car with no rear-window sticker and no official plate. And I need one from a county or city car with no lettering or logo on the sides. While I prefer to stay close to home in Pierce County, I'll take them from anywhere in the Western half of Washington State.

Assuming you are really confident in your position, and are not actually perpetrating a titanic fraud upon the citizens of Washington State, and are not endangering them in the course of that by facilitating impersonators, this should not be a problem. Should it?

Held a sign on the public sidewalk which is not part of the government controlled "school" when a school police admits to abusing his authority. This got me to wondering what is the point of having a special police force at high schools, other than to control speech & regulate private conversations. Welcome to the nanny state of Massachusetts. Cant the regular police handle high school students? This is very disturbing. Special police forces are popping up at high schools & government controlled "community colleges" all over the country.

The good news is that Jeff Gray and Joel Chandler are now officially part of Photography is Not a Crime after having accepted my invitation to become partners, a move that will bolster the site to unprecedented levels in the ensuing months as we incorporate and expand our resources to continuing ensuring government transparency.

The bad news is that Gray is now sitting in jail after having recorded a traffic stop on his way back home to St. Augustine from Miami this afternoon, charged with obstruction of justice.

Clearly, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office just stepped into a huge pile of PINAC Precedent because they have no idea what’s in store for them.

Gray’s dash cam video, which was uploaded by his wife, Teresa, shows he was nowhere near the traffic stop when he was arrested. In fact, she had to turn the dash cam to capture his arrest.

The arrest begins at 2:00.

Teresa tried to use her phone to record the deputy, but he ordered her to “get that camera out of my face,” so she placed it on her lap and continued recording.

The deputy gave Teresa the old sob story as how their jobs are so dangerous that citizens must scurry away as they conduct traffic stops in order not to make them fear for their lives.

“He was walking around the deputy, making him nervous, there’s no reason for that, do you understand how dangerous traffic stops are?” the deputy told Teresa.

But Gray was walking nowhere near the deputy as the video will show.

Teresa said her husband began recording the traffic stop from beside his vehicle in a parking lot, but deputies in an unmarked car ordered him out of the parking lot, so he moved to the green space between the lot and the street, at least 200 feet from the traffic stop.

But that was enough to strike fear in the hearts of deputies.

“(The deputy) has an obligation to that citizen in that car and his family to go home to today,” the deputy told Teresa, the irony that her husband would like to enjoy his Constitutional right to record cops and a night with his own family completely lost on him.

The deputy then ordered Teresa to leave, telling her, “take this vehicle and leave this parking lot, you’re not free to be on the roadway, county right-of-way or this parking lot,” perhaps expecting her to hover her way out of the area, refusing to even tell her where the jail was located.

Don't ever let the police in your home without a warrant. "We'd just like to take a look around, sir"... you will never recover, even if you have "nothing to hide", don't do it. Make sure your spouse and children understand too... I promise that unless you have a direct conversation, there is no way your kids are going to say no when a police officer asks to come in. Your wife may be more savvy, but probably not.

MILLER: D.C. businessman faces two years in jail for unregistered ammunition, brass casing - Washington Times

This is also a call to people who are still unsure about the goal of "gun control" in this country. The DC police sent a 30 man tactical entry team to a mans house that they knew contained no firearms in order to arrest him for simply "being in posession" of a single dud shotgun shell and a single piece of .270 brass.

For those of you hunters or collectors or "old school" who wouldn't ever consider owning an AR15, this article should be a wake-up call.

In October 2009, Shawn Nee, an award-winning documentary filmmaker and photographer in Hollywood, California, was stopped by members of the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department (LASD) while taking pictures at a stop on the L.A. subway system.

Disturbing information about the police stop reveals startling and troubling information about how the Sheriff's Department reports on what it considers suspicious terrorist activity. And what's happening in L.A. is almost certainly happening everywhere across the country.

The encounter was recorded on a body camera Nee wore for protection. A video of the event went viral as viewers watched Deputy Richard Gylfie ask Nee if he was in "cahoots with Al Qaeda" to sell his pictures "for a terrorist purpose." After detaining Nee with the assistance of his partner Deputy Roberto Bayes, searching through the contents of Nee's pockets, and holding Nee's hands behind his back, Gylfie threatened to put him on "the FBI's hit list."

"On one level you're thinking, is this really happening? And then on another level you're thinking, this shouldn't be happening," says Nee of the incident. Nee became a plaintiff in a lawsuit against the sheriff's department along with two other photographers and the National Photographer's Rights Organization. Nee is represented by Peter Bibring at the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California.

"Photography is not a crime, it's artistic expression," says Bibring. "There is no reason to believe that just [because] he's taking photographs he's engaged in any kind of criminal or terrorist activity."

Bibring says that millions of people every day use their cell phones, point-and-shoot cameras, and even professional-grade cameras to document their lives and the world around them. "In public areas, on public streets, no law bars people from taking photographs," says Bibring.

Florida Woman, 19, Arrested For Water Pistol Attack On Her Boyfriend | The Smoking Gun

A 19-year-old Florida woman was arrested last month for misdemeanor domestic violence after allegedly launching an unprovoked water pistol attack on her boyfriend, police report.

Giovanna Borge told cops that her beau “said something to her that she did not like,” so she “took a water pistol and squirted him with water.” During the ensuing confrontation, Borge added, her boyfriend (whom she has dated for a year) dumped a container of water on her and struck her with a pillow. The pair also reportedly exchanged shoves.

Upon investigation, Port St. Lucie Police Department officers concluded that Borge was the “primary aggressor” during the September 27 incident. As a result, she was arrested for “squirting water” on the victim to “antagonize and agitate him against his wishes.” The name of Borge’s damp boyfriend was redacted by cops from an arrest affidavit.

Officers transported Borge in handcuffs from her Port St. Lucie home to the county jail, where she posed for the adjacent mug shot before being released. She is scheduled for an October 30 Circuit Court hearing.

Emails reveal incentives behind Cottonwood police issuing tickets | ksl.com

If you've ever gotten a traffic ticket, you know the sinking feeling you get when police lights pop into your rear view mirror. But what if you found out that citation could be tied to a police department ticket quota or prize contests?

A series of Cottonwood Heights Police Department emails from 2011 and 2012 have recently been revealed and they discuss such quotas and contests.

Some of the emails show police administration offering prizes to officers for writing citations like "free car wash coupons for the next officer to impound vehicles that have no insurance."

In another email, a contest announced a prize of gift cards to the officers who caught anyone tagging or spray painting graffiti.

One Cottonwood Heights resident said he doesn't like the idea of contests for citations.

"That doesn't make sense at all. They should just do their job, that's what they get paid for," Kevin Corkrey said.

New TPD policy means more traffic tickets for Tucson - Tucson News Now

You are now four times more likely to get a traffic ticket in the city of Tucson, thanks to a newly instituted mandatory minimum requirement, or quota, for traffic tickets from Tucson Police.

An exclusive Tucson News Now investigation has discovered that each officer must now write at least one traffic ticket every day.

"I see them pulling people over all the time," driver Mike Nemerouf said.

Police Chief Robert Villasenor says he instituted the rule after the ticket average for individual officers fell to one a week.

"And the reason why is not because they are lazy or they are not wanting or willing to do that. It's that there are so many calls for service that they are just constantly going call to call."

So now, on top of that work load, officers will also have to hit the minimum ticket requirements.

...

But here's the catch: Tucson police don't have any plans to hire any more officers and the work load isn't magically going down to make time for traffic ticket writing, so to hit the minimum, some calls for service will take a back seat to traffic tickets.

"If they are en route to a high-priority call? Obviously not. But if they are en route to a low-priority call, there's a judgment thing: The severity of the offense compared to the severity of the call. Make a judgment on it," Villasenor said.
Yes. Stop someone on the way out to your first call. Because the people calling? They don't need help.

This is about two years after they stopped coming to the scenes of car accidents unless someone is gravely injured. They won't come to your house if you think someone is creeping outside either, unless you've "seen them" and you know "that they have a gun." I can't find the article, but a year or so ago a little old woman on the outskirts thought someone was in her bushes. She called TPD over and over and over (4 calls total, IIRC) and they wouldn't come out. It wasn't until she lied on the final call, told them he had a gun, and they came out to find a man hiding on her property, with a gun, a crowbar, and gloves. It's about a mile between properties out there, so the odds he was going for her neighbor are slim....

Oh, and a followup to yesterdays murder of a 13 year old boy by the LAPD.

But Officer Philip Nace - the YouTube sensation who has developed an international reputation as the angriest cop in the City of Brotherly Love - is perhaps the first Philly lawman to get benched for what a police spokesman described simply as "idiotic behavior."

Lt. John Stanford said yesterday that Nace has been pulled off the street amid an expanding Internal Affairs probe sparked by viral videos out of North Philly's 25th District, where the 46-year-old cop patrolled with an iron fist and a foul mouth.

"Nace is nasty," said Louis Goode, 55, who has lived on the corner of Park Avenue and Auburn Street for 30 years. "It's like he wakes up on the wrong side of the bed every morning."

Goode lives on the same corner where Nace was recently recorded knocking down a basketball hoop and telling the guys with the ball to "have a good day" as he drives away in a police van. "Jesus loves you," Nace's partner yells out the window.

It apparently wasn't the first time Nace toppled the $450 adjustable hoop, which is now broken.

Video: 22 Year Old With Down Syndrome Beaten By The Police For "Bulge In Pants" That Was Only A Colostomy Bag!

"A man with special needs is speaking out after he was left badly bruised by police. Twenty-two-year-old Gilberto Powell, who has Down Syndrome, is left with horrible bruises and scars on his face after he had an encounter with police outside his home.

Liko said, the officer smacked him in the face with an open hand and knocked him to the ground. "His whole hand," he said.

According to the police report, a Miami-Dade Police officer noticed a bulge in Liko's waistband. The officer attempted to conduct a pat down, and Powell tried to run away.

"I said, 'Didn't you know he was a Down Syndrome kid?' And he said, 'No, I'm not a doctor. I don't know.' And I said, 'Well, you can see it in his face that he is a Down Syndrome kid,'" said Josephine" - 7 News

Police attack nurse because she called her supervisor | The Top Information Post

Channel 2 Action News obtained exclusive video of a nurse being thrown to the ground, handcuffed and arrested. She said she was just doing her job.

Channel 2′s Craig Lucie obtained the video (above) and the federal lawsuit filed against four Lawrenceville police officers.

The lawsuit said Marthe Bien-Aime’s Fourth Amendment rights were violated and excessive force was used at the SummitRidge Hospital off Scenic Highway in Lawrenceville.

It was almost 2 a.m. when five Lawrenceville police officers went to the hospital and tried to arrest a patient who was suspected of sexually assaulting another patient.

“They were there to do a job, and I was there to do a job,” Bien-Aime told Lucie.

Bien-Aime said she told the officers she had to call her supervisor first before letting them in a secure area. Minutes later, she handed one officer the phone with her supervisor on the line.

“When she got on the phone all she said was ‘we fixing to bust one of your nurses,’” Bien-Aime said.

In the video, an officer is seen reaching over the door, unlocking it and running toward her. The other officers follow suit and in seconds, they threw her to the ground and she was handcuffed. Then, two officers dragged her out of the nurse station and one of the officers hit her on the back.

“There was a complete overreaction by the police,” said Bien-Aime’s attorney Craig Jones of The Federal Firm.

Motorcycle theft victim frustrated by crime police response

For the past three months, Blaine Singleton has endured a special kind of torment, courtesy first of the thieves who stole his motorcycle — and then the Asheville Police Department.

...

What makes the torment so especially exquisite is that on several occasions Singleton has seen the thief riding his dirt bike in the Shiloh neighborhood near where his business is located. In broad daylight, with no inhibitions.

At least twice he’s called 911, and police sent an officer. And twice it took 20 or 30 minutes and the thief was gone.

On another occasion he saw the bike in a backyard and called the cops, but again they took too long to be of any help.

Singleton has gone so far as to hire a private investigator, in part because he says it took weeks for the police department to assign a detective to his case, and, once they did, the detective has been less than energetic in pursuing leads.

NEWSTALK 1010 - IN-DEPTH RADIO :: Why I was arrested and spent a night in jail -- and why it could also happen to you - Downs Dispatch :: Downs Dispatch Blog Downs Dispatch Blog - Entry

My left cheek is against the cold sidewalk. My chin is burning after being scraped along the concrete. A knee is digging into my back. My right arm is pinned under my chest. With firm direction, the officer tells me to, "Stop resisting!" -- as if I have any choice regarding my limb’s position. I know exactly how to conduct myself, having witnessed it so many times before.

...

As I reached down to pick it up, I heard the fire officer: “Police! Here! This guy!” My phone was just out of my grasp when I was grabbed by my shoulders and thrown face first on to the sidewalk. My left arm was held behind my back; my right armed was pinned under my chest. I tried to comply with the officer’s demands of, “Do not resist,” but his right knee was digging into the small of my back, making it impossible to free my wrist.

What happened next took place so quickly it’s difficult to recall in what order they transpired. I recall handcuffs – real handcuffs – tightly constricting my wrists. An officer dug through my pockets and pulled out all possible evidence. I remember being most concerned about my Metropass going missing, as we were barely midway through the month. I was escorted to a police car and carefully placed in the rear seat. I was okay. I wasn't worried. I knew I had not done anything wrong.

...

I crafted myself a makeshift pillow on the concrete bed-like platform out of my hoodie and sneakers. I was hoping the hood would cover my face and block out some of the light to allow me to sleep. No luck. At one point, a polite officer checked in and offered a second grape cocktail. I took it.

Time moved slowly. As the hours passed, my body – and especially my knees, bruised from the takedown – began to notice the platform wasn't designed for a good night's sleep. When my eyes weren't closed I stared at the walls and ceiling of the cell and wondered where a person could hang himself if he did have shoelaces or a belt.

Cop responding to a call, came around the corner at 45mph, smashed into our business, the car was towed away before we got there. Caused structural damage, and other damage.

...

Yes, they're paying for the damages. We don't want to but we're going to have to sue because of loss of wages, loss of income, ect....we're basically shut down and losing hundreds of dollars a day. Not to mention, the whole town thinks we got broken into, people are calling, threatening us "my stuff better be in there!!" The newspaper/channels won't do a story, we just want the word to be out that we did not get robbed. So much stress, I may need to check my blood pressure.

Sandy Davidsen was walking past three officers when Constable Taylor Robinson shoved her.

Robinson initially claimed Davidsen was grabbing at his gun.

Vancouver Police gave the officer a one-day suspension, but the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner ruled that wasn’t enough. Now a two-day suspension is being considered.

Pivot Legal Society is considering asking for a public hearing.

Treasure Valley traffic stop leads to federal suit | Crime | Idahostatesman.com

Lee Arthur Rice II was dragged out of his car, forced face-first onto the pavement, and kneed in the back and hips during a stop on Interstate 84 between Boise and Nampa. Representing himself, he convinced a judge that police had no right to pull him over in the first place.

Rice, 60, now has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Boise, alleging that he suffered permanent injuries when officers used "excessive and unnecessary force" in taking him into custody as he drove his family home to Nampa after spending Christmas Day that year visiting relatives.

...

"My pain continues to this day. And I have constant worry whenever I see a cop," said Rice, who filed the suit himself and is looking for an attorney to represent him.

Philly Police Beat Man Bloody on Tape | NBC 10 Philadelphia

A video uploaded to YouTube shows disturbing footage of a man on the ground being beaten by a Philadelphia Police officer, while other officers try to hold the man down.

The video begins with four Philadelphia police officers tackling a man on a sidewalk. As the man is on the ground, one officer in particular continues to beat the man on his head, back, arms and chest repeatedly with a metal-looking police baton.

The man being beaten, 29-year-old Askia Sabur, was standing outside a Chinese restaurant when police pulled up and asked him for his ID, according to Sabur’s attorney Evan Hughs. When Sabur turned to walk back into the Chinese restaurant, the police jumped out of the car and tackled him, Hughs told NBC Philadelphia.

Police tell NBC Philadelphia that Sabur was blocking the store's doorway and when they asked him to move, he refused and hit one of the officers.

“I didn’t do nothing wrong,” Sabur says repeatedly in the video.

At first friends yell at Sabur in the video to stop resisting the police, even though he’s already on the ground. But as the officer continues to beat Sabur, the people watching yell for the officer to stop.

“Yo, he’s not fighting! He’s not even fighting!” voices from the crowd shout.

The beating lasts for the duration of the 2-minute and 29-second video. At one point the officer pulls back and blood is visible on his shirt.

Prison Planet.com » Police shot unarmed man, drove an armored truck through his door when he did not exit his property on command

SPRINGFIELD, VA — A paramilitary force was dispatched to a man’s townhouse after his girlfriend reported a domestic dispute. When he stubbornly chose to stay inside his home, police shot him and drove an armored truck through his front door.

The situation began on August 29th around 2:40 p.m. when John Geer — a 46-year-old kitchen designer and installer — was told by his girlfriend that she had decided to leave him. The couple had two daughters together, ages 13 and 17. Emotionally distraught over the breakup, Geer exacerbated the situation by throwing her belongings onto the lawn of their townhouse.
This led to her calling the police. She informed the dispatcher that he owned a firearm. A SWAT team was sent to the quiet cul-du-sac.

dont fuck with our police (as in mine: Fairfax County), they seriously have nothing better to do.

Dont worry; it'll be justified, he probably threatened the cop with the screen door or probably asked for a warrant to enter the house.

This kind of shit is one of the top reason I'm getting out of here ASAP and moving to live with our more sane northern neighbors in Canada. The police are supposed to work for US, and protect and serve US. Instead they are a group that work for each other, and protect one another and sweep the truth under the rug to protect one of their own. When one of them do something wrong, they might get a slap on the wrist and a few days on paid suspension or some ridiculous "punishment". They are there to do a dangerous job, which they knew when they signed up. They should do everything in their means to avoid killing a civilian, including putting their life at risk. Instead they shoot to kill at the first sign of any kind of violence towards them or one of theirs. That is not how it's supposed to fucking work. You're right, it is sickening. The Police States of America. If you don't like it and speak out, the government will spy on you and pin some nasty false charges on you.

Erat 11-01-2013 04:05 AM

I was talking with a few people my age about this (22) and every single one of them said and i'm just going to summarize here. "we don't do their job, so we can't judge. If a police officer tells you what to do, you have to do it".(well i pay their salary, so i have the right to know and judge) Then i'll argue that ANY killing, beating, assault, harassment, ect. of an unarmed person is WRONG. Not only do they disagree with me, they think it's okay to shoot a handcuffed woman, or beat an unarmed homeless man to death. But they think that it's justified even when it's only a SUSPENSION of a wrongdoing. They HONESTLY believe that if you're walking down the street it is okay for the police to stop, arrest you, and shoot you if you resist just if they feel like it. "It's the law, and we must submit to them always".

My generation is brainwashed and fucked.

Edit*

To add to this, i will honestly admit i was completely ignorant about this. I used to think "oh yeah the cops shot the bad guy, win for America, justice has been served". But that was when i was 15 and before i could make a rational thought. Now i can think about things, and see how wrong that way of thinking is. It's a problem, no one in this country should have to die at the hands of lawn enforcement those who are sworn to protect us. Not only that, but violate our rights as Americans.

We have far less civil liberties than you guys have in day to day encounters with police.

It;s illegal to NOT self incriminate in Australia, you can be charged with say, wheelspin, and on the side of the road give you a piece of paper with all these questions and if you DO NOT self incriminate you get a charge for not self incriminating.

We have to stop for breath tests, we cannot refuse to consent to searches, nothing.

No warrants required for anything (almost) we are such sheep we let the govt take any liberties they want without even a peep.

Penal Colony Problems.

Good post though, the point of this thread (after I took over), is to remind people that America is in danger of becoming like places like Australia.

America is unusual because it was the first country that established a Constitution that told the gov't what it could or could not do; and gave the citizens inalienable rights. We are free to do whatever we want unless there's a law the prevents it, our gov't/police can not do anything unless there's a law that says they can.

Our founding principles are what made us the great powerful nation we are, our liberal principles are what are making us more like Australia and other shitty countries everyday.

Lawsuit: Ark. Cop Chased and Tased Woman After She Refused to Show Him Her Breasts | Alternet

A city cop in Arkansas chased a woman through her workplace, shooting a Taser at her, because she refused to show him her breasts, the woman claims in court.

Ashlea Bennett sued the City of Haskell, Ark. and its police Officer Brandon Carter, in Federal Court.

She claims Carter "demanded that she expose her breasts to him" after he entered her workplace while on duty and wearing his uniform.

"Carter's demands to the Plaintiff to expose herself to him occurred multiple times," she says in the lawsuit.

It continues: "That the Plaintiff refused to show her breasts to Carter.

"That, upon her refusal, Carter drew his City of Haskell-issued electroshock Taser weapon from his utility belt, pointed the weapon at plaintiff, and threatened to deploy the same against her if she would not expose her breasts to him.

"That, upon seeing the threat of unlawful force, the plaintiff took physical flight and ran from Carter."

Officer Carter then "proceeded to physically chase the plaintiff through her place of employment," the complaint states.

It continues: "That, while chasing the plaintiff, Carter activated and deployed his electroshock Taser weapon in 'drive stun' mode numerous times at or directed at the plaintiff. That Carter did these actions with the intention of causing fear, imminent fear of bodily harm, and/or emotional distress to gain the plaintiff's compliance with his sexual demands."

This is what the Sheriff's Dept. in my town does on the weekends:

One of my employees is married to a Deputy Sheriff. She described to me what her husband does on weekends and it pissed me off to no end. I live in ******, * a city in serious economic depression. There is a lot of property crime here. 1/2 the houses in many neighborhoods are boarded up and/or being squatted-in by the homeless. The city and county budget has been decimated in recent years, resulting in steep cuts to services for the needy and disabled. Since I work in social services I see firsthand the effects of these cuts and it pisses me off, yet, hearing how the Sheriff's Dept. spend their weekend pissed me off even more.

There are three casinos nearby, each is 30-50 miles from the jail/courthouse. On Friday and Saturday nights the Sheriff's Dept. sends 5-man teams to one of the casinos nearby to conduct prostitution stings. Two deputies monitor the situation from a 'control room,' one deputy acts as the 'john' and one deputy is there for the specific purpose of transporting those arrested from the casino to the jail (60-100 miles round trip).

The team pays for two rooms and the 'john' receives money to gamble with while he scouts the casino for possible prostitutes. So, 5 salaries (+ overtime), gas for three vehicles, two rooms, and gambling money is being spent to bust two, maybe three, prostitutes per night, transport them to county, and see them be released two hours later on a charge that doesn't mean shit.

Meanwhile, there's actual crime occurring. Oh, and the kicker? My employee's husband's sole purpose during these stings is to transport the prostitutes from the casino to the jail. That's all he does. When she told me this my blood began to boil and I got baited into an argument about what policing should be all about.

Her argument (and I'm guessing this came straight from her husband's mouth) was that prostitution was illegal, and, if you could make three busts in one night -vs- working a burglary case for a month for one bust, you'd be silly to waste all that time and money on one burglary arrest. I was stunned at this logic, yet, held my tongue.

I consider this BCND material because of the massive waste of resources and zero effect on 'actual crime.' Prostitution stings are easy and probably fun. Solving actual crime is not. The fact that this guy gets his salary, benefits and overtime from waiting around to give somebody a ride every couple of hours is maddening. I've got seniors that have to decide between medicine and food and these fuckers are hanging-out at casinos, gambling and taking road trips all night. Fucking bullshit.

EDIT: Got rid of my city's name.

Replace drugs with prostitutes and you've just discovered a huge issue with the war on drugs too.

Lead Hill police chief arrested on theft charge

Authorities in north Arkansas say the Lead Hill police chief was arrested on suspicion of selling guns that he seized from a resident.

Police Chief Kenny Barnes was arrested Monday at Lead Hill City Hall. Boone County Sheriff Mike Moore says Barnes is accused of seizing several guns from a home in Diamond City when he was off duty. Barnes is accused of later selling those guns for personal gain.

He was arrested on suspicion of felony theft, abuse of public trust, abuse of office and release or disclosure to unauthorized person for allegedly misusing information from the Arkansas Crime Information Computer.

Judge who ruled sex worker’s rape was ‘theft of services’ faces activist pushback | The Raw Story

Activists in Pennsylvania are campaigning against the retention of a Philadelphia Municipal Court judge who ruled that the assault of a sex worker by multiple men amounted to “theft of services” rather than rape. According to RH Reality Check, Judge Teresa Carr Deni is up for election next week, but the ruling in question took place six years ago.

In 2007, Judge Deni heard the case of a 20-year-old sex worker who consented to meet a man named Dominique Gindraw via Craigslist and have intercourse with him for $150. Gindraw asked if his friend could participate for an additional $100. The woman consented.

However, when the second man arrived, he produced a gun and the woman was forced to have sex with the two men and two others. She received no money.

Driver says Sonoma deputy pulled gun on him - SFGate

The Sonoma County sheriff's deputy who shot and killed a 13-year-old boy after mistaking his toy AK-47 for a real rifle pulled a gun on a motorist twice during a traffic stop on Highway 101 about two months earlier, the driver said Thursday.

Jeff Westbrook of Santa Rosa said he was mistreated by Deputy Erick Gelhaus after being pulled over Aug. 21 in Cotati for failing to signal a lane change in his BMW. The interaction troubled Westbrook so much that he recalled asking Gelhaus at one point, "Sir, is there something wrong with you?"

...

Westbrook said he and a colleague were traveling south on Highway 101 near Highway 116 when Gelhaus pulled them over and then approached the BMW on the passenger side.

There wasn't much room on the side of the highway, Westbrook said, so he rolled down his window and offered to move the car. That's when Gelhaus pulled a gun on him and yelled at him to turn the car off, Westbrook said. He said he responded that the car was already off.

According to Westbrook, Gelhaus returned to his cruiser to write a ticket. Several minutes later, the driver said, Gelhaus asked him to walk back to his cruiser and then pulled a gun on him a second time, asking him if he had any weapons before frisking him.

Westbrook said he finally asked the deputy why he had pulled him over, with Gelhaus referring to an illegal lane change. Westbrook said that's when he asked the deputy if he was OK. Gelhaus didn't answer, he said.

I've always been an advocate for advancement in science, space exploration and generally pushing all scientific frontiers, but sometimes thinking about things like the things in this thread make me realize how primitive we still are. We are one step away from reverting back to walking hunched over with a club in hand, throwing rocks and grunting, running rape parties against rival groups. Maybe we aren't ready to advance at the rate that we are. Most people like to think that they are so evolved and moral, but are they really? All of this corruption and personal gain going on around the world. I guess it's only human nature after all, but still. We are this unstable and uncivilized (though we pretend to be civilized) and we have the technology to destroy all life on earth. Reminds me of a Star Trek TNG episode where Riker gets injured on a planet that they are covertly observing for possible entry into the Federation. They weren't ready for the advances they had made so quickly, and a lot of people were scared.

No idea where all of that came from. Not really related to this thread, but sort of relevant I guess. Off to bed, my mind is foggy.

^ Exactly what I mean in that video. Police aren't working for us. They have that primal mob mentality. They are not there for the good of us, but for the good of one another. It's them vs. "us".

Something is terribly fucked up with this world.

Police release video of officer involved shooting at convenience store - Las Vegas MyNews3 - KSNV

Officer Evans observed the individual, later identified as Antoine Hodges, 30, of Las Vegas, enter a convenience store located in the 300 block of North Nellis Boulevard.

As the officer approached the front of the store Hodges began to exit the business.

Officer Evans ordered Hodges to continue to exit the store and to show him his hands.

Instead of following the officer’s instructions Hodges retreated backwards into the store and began moving away from the officer. Officer Evans quickly followed the suspect while continuing to order him to stop and show him his hands.

As he was backing away Hodges was holding his left hand up toward the officer, clutching his car keys and cell phone, while moving his right hand to a position behind his back near his rear pants pocket, concealing it from the officer’s view.

As Hodges continued his retreat from the officer he backed into an ice cream freezer, causing him to abruptly turn towards Officer Evans who fired one shot from his handgun.

Hodges was struck in the abdomen, and transported to the UMC Trauma center where he was treated and released for a superficial gunshot wound.

The investigation into this incident revealed Hodges did not have a weapon in his right rear pants pocket. Additionally, it has now been determined Hodges is not the suspect in the double homicide.
