They seriously haven't showed the full frontal yet. Somebody in the audience needs to step up and take over the camera.

This band is horrific. I found some pics on jalopnic though and I'm liking it.

Take off your hood!

Let us see under your sideskirts!

18psi 09-03-2014 09:18 PM

Do like.

Good job Mazda.

whinin 09-03-2014 09:18 PM

That front is smexy, dunno about the rear end though...

petrolmed 09-03-2014 09:19 PM

Yeah I was cool with the James Bond theme opening music, but cut that shit now and focus on what we're here for already.

I think the official press photos look pretty fantastic.

turbofan 09-03-2014 09:22 PM

I don't know why people are upset that the rear looks like a Jag F type. The F-type is one of the best looking cars ever IMO.

The front looks pretty good to me, I was hoping for a closer relationship to the current Mazda corporate grille but tweaked a bit for the Miata. It looks pretty effeminate IMO.

I CANNOT wait to drive one. Will drive the first one that rolls off the truck. No idea when that is though. Will be watching incoming vehicles....

So, what's in it?

Duran Duran... Die.

Erat 09-03-2014 09:22 PM

I think we're all convinced. Now we just need numbers, under hood, price, and test drive video.

lol

so far, I'm really impressed.

Jeffbucc 09-03-2014 09:26 PM

So glad the front bumper has a solid line and no fucking grin face. Thank you Mazda for not ruining the grille portion.

Erat 09-03-2014 09:27 PM

High res press photos.

I bet you will.. literally, when it ends up for 1/3 price at an auction because it actually rolled off the car transporter on its way to the dealership. :giggle:

RedCarmel 09-03-2014 09:28 PM

Not loving the back, reminds me of a BMW. Front looks a little S2000ish, would have preferred more of the Kodo influence. But maybe my initial opinion will change when I get a good look at it at some point

Mobius 09-03-2014 09:29 PM

Full of win.

18psi 09-03-2014 09:30 PM

its got the new jag look

which is a not a bad look at all.

Jeffbucc 09-03-2014 09:31 PM

From the angled shot of the rear, it looks really fat, not phat, but fat, bulbous.

Looks great from the very back but that angled profile looks weird.

I'm happy with it, but I also don't want another car loan under my belt since I have no debt.

fucking duran duran?

fooger03 09-03-2014 09:34 PM

Mine's faster...

Jeffbucc 09-03-2014 09:35 PM

I'm waiting to see how tight the engine bay is especially after how tight the NC bay is.

ctdrftna 09-03-2014 09:36 PM

i like it!!! now whats the damn specs!

dieselmiata 09-03-2014 09:37 PM

RedCarmel 09-03-2014 09:39 PM

The front is growing on me with those hi res pics.

Terrible car unveiling. I wonder how much longer we have to wait before they bring the live feed back.

Had to leave room for the intercooler in the Alfa, no?

Jeffbucc 09-03-2014 09:42 PM

Every single person is saying, "great, now do more about the car and not the music"

Looks like it could be turbo friendly as long as you rip out all the emissions crap modern cars require these days.

God I love living in a place that requires no emissions.

petrolmed 09-03-2014 09:46 PM

The Japanese stream was much more rewarding.

KMiata 09-03-2014 09:52 PM

Cool to see the entire engine behind the steering rack, like an S2000. In 15 years when the ND is a cheap track rat it will make engine swaps a lot easier :)

Edit: is that an electric power steering pump hanging off the front of the rack? sweeeeeet

Braineack 09-03-2014 09:56 PM

the new BMW roadster looks pretty good.

HHammerly 09-03-2014 10:01 PM

It is going to be hell to fit an EFR on the american spec car with that steering colum there 😕

No specs at all. Lol at the guy saying "I dragged that out as long as I could" before they killed the mic.

Im glad I wasnt the only one who heard that too lol

18psi 09-03-2014 10:33 PM

 that was the best part

Chilicharger665 09-03-2014 10:43 PM

The interior seems to be very cool. The tach was huge and in the center and there was basically nothing but 3 knobs and the screen. There were USB plugs and such in the lower part, but other than that, it looked very clean.

+1 awful unveiling with the USA feed.

The car looks good so far. The tail lights are the biggest stylistic departure to me. The front end looks NC evolution, which is fine.

I love how mid-engine the car is. The polar moment looks nice n tight, just the way I like it.

Ryan_G 09-03-2014 11:37 PM

That car is sexy as fuck. I couldn't care less that it isn't traditional mazda. It will age well too. I think they nailed it. I really want one.

EO2K 09-04-2014 12:04 AM

I was trapped in the office after hours dealing with a retarded consultant and I am very fucking disappointed I missed this live. Kinda. Reading the commentary with no context is all kinds of :giggle:

So when they bring this out to Laguna tomorrow, I'll jump in and pull the hood release, someone open the hood and everyone else can start snapping pics. Who is with me?!

ThePass 09-04-2014 12:09 AM

I think it looks brilliant.

Is it just me or in little ways does it look like the designers saw the Catfish and were like, "hmmmm.... yess... maybe a liiiitle bit of that..."

18psi 09-04-2014 12:12 AM

I'll do it G :giggle:

tomorrow? you mean friday?

Ungh, yeah that. I just worked 2x 12+hr days back to back and I'm losing a minimum of half a vacation day tomorrow. Forgive me if I can't remember what day this is, I'm starting to get a little punchy. Should make for a great weekend ;)

FM has killer pics from the event up on Facebook for those who are so inclined. https://www.facebook.com/flyinmiata

actually the rear of the catfish is 100 times better looking.

Completely agreed. The rear (and front for that matter) looks like a japanese reface of an Alfa. Especially the rear, looks kind of like the multilayer GTV back.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1409807276

Edit: Looks like a take on the 4c rear end in some ways.

http://thesupercarkids.com/wp-conten...-gallery_5.jpg

99mx5 09-04-2014 01:36 AM

I'm liking the style. Overall the design looks good, the front could be less "happy mouth" but it's clean. I wish they went with an oval bumper intake.

cordycord 09-04-2014 01:37 AM

Believe me--I know EXACTLY what it's like to say that my car looks like someone else's design. :) Z3 this, Jaguar that, fugly this, why didn't you do that. These designers usually are in a competition with other design teams from other countries, and get pushed and pulled based on what corporate wants in the vehicle, and what "legal" will let them get away with.

It ain't easy, and I think Mazda's done a spectacular job...and not just because it's got a family resemblance. :)

turbofan 09-04-2014 01:39 AM

The more I look at it, the more I like it. I'm liking it a LOT.

But more than anything I just can't wait to drive it. After seeing what they did with the 3 , this is going to be absolutely fantastic to drive.

Jeffbucc 09-04-2014 02:53 AM

MT.net Laguna Seca operation "steal the ND" With how many we have coming to MRLS there is no way we could fail.

Also, what is the Miata.net drama thats going on? I must have missed something.

sixshooter 09-04-2014 09:15 AM

So they've finally designed one that looks like something a heterosexual male might buy new. Too bad the reputation is already slightly faggy or they could have more sales. Guys like power. If they build enough power into it then it will do well. If the engineers that designed the very first Miata weren't so hung up on keeping the power level low then the car would have done even better off the bat. The original '90 should have had an optional 2.x liter engine and this new one should have 200 advertised hp turbo as an option to keep up with the times.

Absolutely , 200hp is needed for this car. Why can't mazda build engines like Honda. They have a good 2.5l to start with, a revised head and intake and a 91 octane minimum would do that trick

asmasm 09-04-2014 09:40 AM

The two tire sizes shown so far are 205/45-17 and 195/50-16 which are about the same total tire diameter as a 225/50-15. The NDs brakes aren't gigantic- I am holding out hope that we can stick 15's on there and continue to enjoy cheap wheels and tires.

Leafy 09-04-2014 09:47 AM

Fuck that. I'm holding out hope that there'll end up being wider 23"ish diameter tires to go on the 17s. I would convert to 17s in order to get wider than my current slicks if they came in the right diameter. Or on a street car I would totally rock the 17s if it got me wider street tires in the correct diameter.

It's everyone trying to say how much they hate the ND and how the NC was the pinnacle of both Mazda engineering and design. They're a bunch of pearl clenchers.

Go back to mnet so you can live in unicorn dream land. Why can't Mazda make engines like Honda? Honda is the #1 manufacturer of internal combustion engines IN THE WORLD. They have the expertise and development. I'm sorry to break it to you that Mazda doesn't have a motorcycle or F1 division to draw experience from, but those are the breaks. The Miata formula has always been the FWD econo motor turned sideways, and huge surprise... the ND is going to have a FWD econo motor turned sideways.

I think that if the rated horsepower is above 165HP, we'll be absolutely golden.
