What a waste. Nice build, Boo on "drifting" the car.

I swear to christ if one more kid comes up to me when I'm driving my miata and go, "Woah, do you drift?!" I'm gonna punch them in their fucking face!!

It's nice to finally see pics of this car. My buddy John Lawlor has been telling me about it, looks pretty interesting. It'll be cool to see the finished product. Good luck with it.

Hahaha... you are very much on track as to what i want to spend some money on (hard top comes first though). Yes, I know you have one of those for sale also :). But what would be the fun in buying a complete working turbo kit?! I come from the VWs'... where nothing is supposed to work the way it should from the get go... and if it does, there is something wrong. Thats how we have fun. Spending 4 hours on cleaning injectors after a swap, to only find out the missfire was being caused by one of the brand new spark plugs... it was non responsive.

Yes, I've looked at that solstice. The power doesn't hold it sideways down straights, it's momentum. You don't need 400whp in a miata to be competitive. It wouldn't hurt, but you'd be better spending efforts to get more power in the low end. So when you come in to a low speed corner from a high speed section your motor won't bog, and you won't be killing clutches trying to keep the turbo spooled. Never make the misstake of thinking making more smoke will win in formula d.

The difference is you actually used to drift.

im learning how to drift right now. in fact, me and my buddy will be starting on our next project - 89 240sx track bitch. we are considering making it drift-only setup. so far budget looks to be around $10k :)

i dont know whats the big deal with drifting... i like it - you get to learn a lot about car controls!

It's popular to hate on by the grip crowd, basically the same reason they hate any movie with cars in it unless it's Lemans or Grand Prix. It makes they feel faster, and more "pure". Alot of grip drivers think they already have that skill mastered even though they've never done it, much like your delivery truck driver thinks he would be awesome at nascar.

Wish we could just pay more attention to his build... and not the end use of it. Good work and cool projects triumph over all.

wow what is with the drift hating, i love all forms of motor sports, i was into honda drag racing befor i got my miata, i think that roadracing is bad ass too. just drifting is fun and a way to express my driving. i ride flatland bmx also and drifting feels similar to that. i think alot of the sport compact industry is pissed cause drifting as taken the spotlight.
most people who talk shit about drifting have never actualy drifted, they thing that dumping the clutch and power sliding a 90 degree intersetion is drifting. when your doing 80mph and you get your car within a foot from a wall your heart goes into your throat. if drifting is gay to most of you then i guess ralley racing or sprint cars or ice racing is for the dogs too. just because i plan on drifting it doesnt mean i can ajust my alignment and go do a time attack event, most drift cars can handle like you wouldnt belive, if you dont have traction you dont drift(well in control)

as for the bottom end power, a 6spd with 5sp 4.1 gears means short gears so if im gonna dog i can drop it down a gear,or clutch kick, or what ever.

Really? I'd like to think the 5+ years I've spent at autocross has taught me more about car control than "drifting" ever could. I honestly don't see what the big deal is, I think its hella lame and can't believe its actually considered a motorsport. :jerkit:

but how fast are you going in auto cross, 40-50, maybe 60??, and a cone dosnt do any damage, rally racing shares alot in common with drifting, trees and walls do the same damage, and in auto cross your not controling the car in oversteer, your keeping it on the edge of over steer. drifting is simpily puting the car at its absolute limits, are cars have limited steering travle and a short wheel base. making them one of the harder cars to drift. to balance a miata right on steering lock without spining is a feat in its own.

You're not going to win here.

OMG! 5+ years! Of regional autocross! I've heard top F1 teams are scouring the world for that kind of experience! Can you sign my car, prease? Wait? Is anyone from Kansas allowed to use the word Hella?

Are we about to start whipping out dicks and rulers?

I'd imagine you wanna run FD since that's what you're building the car for?

Of course I'm just some schmo on the internettz, but take it for what it's worth. Dropping down a gear or clutch kicking or slipping the clutch will cause the car to shift and seem choppy no matter how smooth you think you can do it. It's better to be able to just roll on more or less throttle.

IMO, if you can't survive the drift bashing from this forum then you surely don't belong in a race car. :bigtu: And I bet a lot of the bashers don't have this kind of build goin' down. It's just a shame you're putting such a small engine in that giant space. ;)

Comparing rally driving to drifting is one of the more amusing comparisons I have heard.

Last I heard... pure speed/time was the score for rally... vs style points from the judges.

Thus the very enjoyable "figure skating of motorsports" tagline.
