Hazaa! Good to see this bad larry running. What's all the smoke coming out of the bay; burning oil or exhaust wrap?

ctdrftna 05-01-2010 08:55 AM

Its just oil off the manifolds. 1st time the car runs. Nothing big

mx5autoxer 05-01-2010 01:25 PM

Wow! It finnaly runs! It sounds like it could unleash holy hell at any moment.

ctdrftna 05-15-2010 02:14 PM

got it running again. set the base timing, everything seems cats meow. still needs alot of tunning. atleast it will rev up now but its very rough, but thats why im taking it to the dyno for tuning. sounds mean as fuck though and the temps are good and A/F is around 12.5:1 - 14.0:1
although i have a mismatch with my a/f between the gauge and the TS on my laptop of about 1.0 leaner on the laptop.

Cspence 05-15-2010 02:22 PM

When you hitting the dyno? I can't wait to see this thing tearing up the road!

1slowna 05-15-2010 02:40 PM

wow i love that turbo placement. looks killer.

mx5autoxer 05-16-2010 10:59 AM

I wanna see rubber being roasted by the end of the month!:skid:

ctdrftna 05-16-2010 01:39 PM

The car drives too! Just took it down my street and back

ctdrftna 05-16-2010 09:48 PM

miata2fast 05-17-2010 08:23 AM

It sounds pretty serious.

Are you planning on going as far on the body work as you did on the engine/drive?

ctdrftna 05-17-2010 09:05 AM

yeah pretty serious

i already have autokonexion kevlar gt widebody kit, carbon vented hood and version 2 trunk and finish panne. i posted pics a few pages back.

once its tuned ill be focusing on body stuff cause the weather is getting nice out. i need to go pick out my paint and get the body stuff. the car needs to make a quick trip to a body shop to have the damage in the back of the car straightend out. then once i do that i gotta cut out the rear quarters to prepare for the new flares. i have a shit load of work still ahead of me, i still need to rebuild the diff with a 3.6 gear set and a kazz lsd.

miata2fast 05-17-2010 10:44 AM

Did you have some kind of budget in mind when you started building the car, or did you just kind of 'wing it'? It looks like you have a grip invested.

I myself tend to get the shipright disease, and end up spending way more than I should, and taking longer than expected.

AbeFM 05-18-2010 01:20 PM

I love the blow-off sounds. Certainly lookin' good. Sure needs some tuning though.

Are you really thinking 440 injectors will be enough?! Seems like a nicely done motor - even on my mostly stock FM-II with MSM cams, I am pushing the limits of my 550's.

Have you run through and set up injector opening times and all that? It makes it a heck of a lot easier to tune, that thing should be purring like a kitten.

ctdrftna 05-18-2010 01:34 PM

I have 880's not 440's . Well scratch dynoing on fri. They fucked up my appoinment and schedualed me on a day that they will be racing world challange in canada. So I don't get tuned untill june 9th. Talk about a lot of hustle and work for nothing big big let down

astroboy 05-18-2010 01:46 PM

That blows, you have alot of time to do bodywork maybe? Do you still need those eyeball vents? They are sitting on my workbench...

AbeFM 05-18-2010 03:10 PM

AH! I read the wrong guy's sig. :-) Sounds much better.

Perhaps not for beating on it, but I'm sure you can do a street tune pretty quick to get yourself in reasonable shape. MS-II? There's some writeup on how to get started in my Baseline MSQ thread for my adaptercard, should work just as well on your setup.

ctdrftna 05-18-2010 08:06 PM

its ms1, braineack set me up with a base map. i may play with ve analize live. im all about breaking in and tuning on the dyno

Dogbox 05-18-2010 09:02 PM

who will be doing the tuning and dyno for your car, i will be at mosport this weekend to watch the World Challenge race

ctdrftna 05-18-2010 09:10 PM

synapse motorsport, they are running a acura tsx

AbeFM 05-22-2010 04:10 PM

Breaking in I can totally agree on, I'm a bit nervous too about a new motor going in with a map that's not ready for it.

But certainly the VE stuff is easy, and there's a closed loop control which helps keep it sane too. Certainly so you have no worries under 5 psi. Put on a knock sensor and you're in a "definitely won't break it" mode.

ctdrftna 05-23-2010 09:54 AM

im happy now with how the car is, i think its good to go to the dyno, i had some issues that are now worked out(car was running in rpm accel and launch control was turned on, thats why it reved like shit) now it runs much nicer. i do have some valvetrain tick. im not horibly worried about that its solid shim under bucket, once its dyno'd and fully broken in under load, ill go back and re-shim it.

i do have one concern though
at the moment i dont have a thermostat in the car. now i understand it wont let the car heat up fast, in my log i took yesterday the car held between 179 and 197 thats pretty much where i have the fan set to. the reason im reluctant to put one back in is my turbo coolant feed comes from the port on the block near the tranny, goes into the turbo then the return comes out of the turbo and goes to the radiator end tank. my thoughts on this car sence the rad isnt circulating cooland when the thermostat is closed, then my turbo is not circulating it either?? im thinking the best solution other than changing my turbo lines is to get a 160* thermostat and drill like two 3/16 holes in it so that some water can continue to circulate

thats what i though. i love how when you bring up that your building a drift car, it automaticly gets bashed.... i mean it isnt like 1/2 the cars at redline time attack are also compeating in formula D or anything

Nawww

I think we need 100 more posts about how "drifting isnt really racing, its just a show", "But it still requires skill and control, just like real racing"

Oh, and we need psiturbo to post again how ctdrftna is just wasting money and should have just bought an ebay turbo kit like him and it would have been just as fast.

:giggle:

ctdrftna 05-26-2010 08:49 PM

AHHHHHHHH FML!!!!!!!!!!

i go to work on the car tonight and the fucking radiator has a leak in the core. WTF how does this shit happen. the car has been sitting since last weekend.
1st the ECU shit, then the dyno appointment gets all fucked up. now this.

im ready to break down and part the car out and move on with my life, obviously someone doesnt want to see this thing done.

of course this has to go down two weeks before the dyno session which means i need to overnight a damn radiator to my house with bungs and have the thing welded up and ready to go in next sunday. a $300 setback. i swear to god if i get to my dyno session and something goes wrong. this whole car is gonna be up for sale. and im gonna be rockin a evo x

webby459 05-26-2010 08:54 PM

Meh, Morgan will work with you on the timing of the dyno stuff. I rushed to get mine ready to be strapped to the rack, and just look what it got me....

miataspeed2005 05-26-2010 09:23 PM

It's a project car, you gotta expect problems. You sound like vash now lol, when you put together a car from scratch you are gonna run into some issues, just work out all the little problems and your car will be good to go soon. Btw why can't you just weld the leak?

ctdrftna 05-26-2010 09:26 PM

cause its in the center of the core. atleast thats what it looks like. ive calmed down a bit. im gonna bring it to a radiator repair shop tomm and have it pressure tested and possibly fixed. sometimes they can crimp off a tube in the core to seal the leak. i have alot of time into my rad, with bungs and tabs and shit i would hate to have to do up a new one

Cspence 05-26-2010 09:32 PM

My thoughts exactly....My rad had a leak in the core last year, Perraults in Meriden welded it and she's been good since.

ctdrftna 05-26-2010 09:55 PM

yeah i was gonna call them tomm, any idea what there hours are ?

That guy is always there....except from 12-1 for lunch which he leaves the phone off the hook :giggle:

mighty mouse 05-26-2010 10:19 PM

I have a really good aluminum guy in chepachet RI if you feel like making a trip...

shlammed 05-26-2010 11:48 PM

my mishimoto whenever you drain and refill it has a minor leak until you drive it for an hour... i mean a drip every 25-30 seconds so its not alot.

minor problems happen dude... thats why not everyone has a 400whp miata (or 4-800hp car in general typically)

I hope the best for you :)

Doppelgänger 05-27-2010 08:03 AM

Drain adiator, remove, used JB weld to fix.

I bought a Koyo brand new from Goodwin years ago, and before they had a warning abotu the A/C lines rubbing a hole in the radiator and it happened to me. Slapped some JB and it was fine for 3 years with TONS of abuse..was still holding fine when I sold the car.

ctdrftna 05-31-2010 11:48 AM

ok, rad went to the shop, they said they couldnt fix it, i have a new rad plus all the bungs and fittings i need on the way from summit, i will have them this week. ill have it all welded up by this coming weekend and with any luck ill have it back on the car ready to go to the dyno, for the 9th.... provided i dont have some other god forsaken issue

miatacross 06-01-2010 07:45 PM

Dude I just spent the last hour and a half reading thru this thread and got about 8 boners and came about 7 times...waiting for dyno results for the 8th!!!

Beautiful build, lots of time and money was invested in this thing!!!

I come from a drifting background (sold my s13 a few months ago) and will be making my miata my drift car soon enough and seeing this thread was just amazing! subscribed! can't wait to see some vids!!!

Believe me, you will have more God forsaken issues. Be patient.

Go fuck some chick or take a Lexapro, which ever is most readily available.

Hyper4mance2k 06-03-2010 07:12 AM

Just get a half naked girl on the hood and take pics; that will fix everything.

hingstonwm 06-03-2010 04:07 PM

This build rocks!

The work you have done is absolutely amazing.

When you take a car as far as this one, you are going to have a few more setbacks then the typical greddy build. Just keep moving forward, the light at the end of the tunnel is growing brighter by the day!

This thing absolutely makes my build look like a hack job.

chris850 06-04-2010 06:36 PM

omfg cant wait to see the dyno and #'s

ctdrftna 06-08-2010 05:33 PM

dyno tomm, 10:00 @ synapse. wish me luck

hingstonwm: when i look at a pro formula d car i feel like my build is hack lol. i went to the event for some ambition and came back more depressed lol

astroboy 06-08-2010 06:03 PM

good luck mang!

Funk dat. Your build is fantastic. You should be proud. There are always nicer cars no matter how much time/money you put into it. It is going to be fast and function >> form.

1 Attachment(s)
AND THE RESULTS ARE.........

Attachment 196905

418 HP
285 FTLBS
18psi
8000RPM

we kept it pretty conservative. i decided against reving it to to the moon although we did bring it to 8200 and it didnt make a diffrence so i kept it at 8, once we got it to free rev nice it went smooth. its running in mapdot, tps dot worked like shit. this is on the wastegate spring too, no boost control. i have some boost creap, like 4-5 psi of boost creap. my wastegate is to small. i have a 13.5 psi spring combo.

vids coming soon!!!!

miatacross 06-09-2010 07:37 PM

%&$#! YESSSSS!!! Nice!!! vids please!

That's some good shit rite there.

240_to_miata 06-09-2010 10:43 PM

very nice

turotufas 06-09-2010 11:14 PM

Fuck. Can't wait to see your sliding skills now!

Sparetire 06-09-2010 11:31 PM

With the 8K redline you have a pretty broad TQ band to use too. Sweet.

The sound is interesting too. Its not nearly the incoherent wall of sound I have usually gotten from high output turbo 4s. You can really hear the pulses distinctly, which is awesome.

If that's a hack then everything I have ever done is polished manure with a bow on it. Awesome work.

hingstonwm 06-09-2010 11:59 PM

absolutely awesome!!! Great Job!

18psi 06-10-2010 12:09 AM

 NIIIIIIIICE

Wasn't it all worth it now? :D
