That made "drones" cool, so when cheap, lightweight quadcopters came along, people started calling them "drones" in order to piggyback on the coolness of the MQ9, and distance them from "RC Airplanes", which are nerdy, despite the fact that quadcopters have virtually nothing at all in common with military aircraft.

My first thought when that happens to me is "too close for missiles, switching to guns."

 

They couldnt be bothered to pay attention to what was happening long enough to merge at speed.
Its a common problem when you are composed entirely of human excrement.

 

I was in the middle of a shoulder check knowing that a 30mph merge was asking for trouble when the green car and 3 or 4 cars in front of it came to the stop. I actually passed a car still stopped at the end of the ramp when i got going again.

 

The funny thing is that they've really never been called drones within the military community. They went from UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) to UAS (unmanned aerial system) to RPA (remotely piloted aircraft), the latter mostly in an attempt to placate former "real" pilots that were pulled out of the cockpit to fly aa shipping container. Unfortunately, the Air Force's attempts to maintain the status quo fighter pilot prestige directly precipitated a series of idiotic decisions regarding the design and operation of UAVs.

Ever try roasting chicken in a toaster oven? It can be done, and well. I'm tempted to datalog the power consumption of the oven and compare it to the gas flow required to pan-cook an equivalent amount of chicken breast, and then come up with some kind of conversion formula to compare deliciousness vs. energy-consumption.





But **** it, because chicken.







And because it would be pointless, as I have to pay for electricity, but cooking gas is free.


Note to self: invent gas-powered toaster oven. Also, find lid for egg-poacher. I know it's around here somewhere. ******* Jedi...







Actually, I am prohibited by the lease from installing a washing machine, dryer, window air conditioner, waterbed, ceiling fan, and a bunch of other very specific stuff. But I'm not specifically prohibited from installing an electrical generator powered by the free cooking gas... I'm thinking about how the Empire State Building (which has its own ZIP code) is currently floating an idea to go "off-grid" by installing their own electrical generators powered by gas purchased from Con-Ed, on the basis of the fact that it turns out to be considerably cheaper in the long run than just purchasing electricity directly from Con-Ed.

Granted, if all the broadcasters jump ship and move to 1WTC, that plan will probably be moot. We consume more electricity than all the other tenants combined.

Fun fact: ESB earns more revenue from selling tickets to the observation deck than it does from tenant rent.

I.. I dont even know where to start, I daily drive a 30hp Kei class diahatsu and I can merge from a T intersection into flowing 50mph traffic just fine.

I can also get the **** out of the fast lane when anyone else behind me is going even 1mph faster.

Well, the kitchen is poorly-ventilated and on the interior of the apartment (no windows). And the gas oven puts out a hell of a lot of ambient heat. I don't know much about gas ovens (this is only my second apartment which has had one), but I notice that on the door of the oven, above the glass, there's a row of vents which permits hot air to escape even when the door is closed. Interestingly, if you open the pull-out drawer below the oven (where pans are stored), you can see the flame quite clearly, and that compartment gets so hot when in operation that you can't remove a pan from it without using oven mitts.

There doesn't seem to be anything defective about the oven, it's just very oddly designed. And old. I'll shoot some pictures tonight.

Anyway... When the ambient temperature of the apartment is already high, using the oven raises the temperature of the apartment considerably, making it uncomfortable. This seems like an extremely inefficient design, but then I'm no expert.

Over the years, I've become accustomed to using the toaster oven as much as possible, as it has three primary advantages:

1. It comes up to temperature quickly,
2. It uses less energy to cook small items than would the large oven, and
3. It sits on the countertop, which is convenient for me since I'm tall.

Of course, I'm now in the situation where advantage #2 is not merely negated buy actually inverted by the fact that, while the big oven still uses more energy, this comes at no direct cost to me. I say no direct cost because if I happen to be using the air conditioning at the time, the large amount of waste heat produced still probably costs me more in the form of increased load on the A/C. So during the summertime, my guess is that the toaster oven is still the overall winner. In the wintertime, the big oven is probably the winner on direct cost (as the side-effect of it producing a large quantity of waste heat is beneficial), I just need to adjust my mindset and get over the "big oven bad" mentality.

It also means I need to find a place to store the pizza stone when I'm using the big oven for something other than making a pizza.

Not sure how I feel about the dutch oven. Never used one outside of a campfire scenario, and it's another piece of hardware I'd have to purchase and then find a place to store. This isn't a big kitchen. You can't even enter / exit it when the fridge is open (same applies to the oven door).

Funny story about the drawer below the stove.

All of the stoves I had before my last house had drawers that were only used for storing things. No exposed flames. Same with my gf.

We move into the new house, she decides to put her plastic cutting boards in the drawer below the new oven.....see where this is going?

We go to make some frozen pizza, and about 5 minutes into preheating the smoke alarm goes off and the house starts stinking like burning plastic. We opened the oven and couldnt figure out what the hell was smelling. Thought that the PO had left something in the bottom.

Then we opened the drawer to see the cutting boards all melted together and smoking.

Lesson learned.

 

WTF is up with that? Who the hell designs an oven in such a way that it blasts flame at the objects stored under it?


What I really want is a microwave oven that cooks food evenly and promotes browning and the maillard reaction.

(Actually, what I really want is a droid that understands the binary language of moisture vaporators. But the above-described microwave oven would be a close second.)
