Well, it's okay, as Nancy Pelosi said about the Earthquake in Haiti:

"I think that this can be an opportunity for a real boom economy in [California]. ... [California] can leap-frog over its past challenges, economically, politically, and demographically in terms of the rich and poor and the rest there, and have a new -- just a new, fresh start."

Group buy?

Miataland Theme Park?

ZX-Tex 01-18-2011 02:08 PM

In for the group buy, but you need to transport the track to Texas.

Fucking TV! My goddamn $230 part didn't fix my problem. Been without a TV for several months now. I used the official Samsung technician repair manual and tracked down the cause to the main board using their step by step troubleshooting guide. Fucking thing is still doing the same power cycle thing. I'm not sinking another penny into this, and I'm highly considering dropping Samsung all together, which has been my favorite electronics brand up till now. Millions of my model were sold, and many thousands of people have had this same issue, and they won't put out a recall on it. So I'm stuck with a $1500 lemon of a TV, that I have dropped an additional ~$325 into. Only pieces I haven't replaced are the power supply and the optics assembly. Apparently some people have replaced all parts and still gotten the same issues, because the factory parts are incompatible and cause each other to fail. Way to go Scamsung. :vash: So now I'm stuck watching only half of my available channels on my 24" Samsung monitor (with a fucking stuck pixel) with my TV tuner box. I'm not a fucking happy camper.

Maybe that was a bit premature. I'm down to isolating it to only one other part, the power supply, which was my suspect number one from the beginning. I also noticed I may have misread or misinterpreted the manual a bit (thanks Japanese to English translation), so I sort of cost myself $230. At least it has a $50 core value, so really only $180ish. The power supply will be $140 with a $50 core value, so another $90 should fix it. I also see Samsung has a new part number for the power supply, so maybe they tweaked it a bit.

Is it gay to drive around in your Miata with the top down? I'm taking all the big steps first.

Vashthestampede 01-19-2011 09:43 AM

I put out a WTB ad for some OEM 16" or 17" wheels on the Mazda6 forum so I could replace my gf's OEM 18" wheels. The past 3 or 4 storms we got here were enough to convince her to change over to some dedicated snow tires.

A guy sent me a PM saying he had a set of OEM 17" painted gunmetal in good condition. We went back and forth a few times and I was able to snag them for $200 shipped for the set. About half what I've seen them going for normally.

Yesterday they show up via UPS and low and behold......NO FUCKING BOXES!! I cant believe the guy shipped me these wheels without any boxes!! What a dick! I still have to check them out and see how banged up they are (if at all), but its more so the idea. Good deal or not, no boxes (or packing material for that matter) is a dick move. :vash:

Braineack 01-19-2011 10:37 AM

lol.

mgeoffriau 01-19-2011 10:40 AM

Wait, so he just slapped the shipping label directly on the wheels? I'm surprised UPS took them like that.

tires != wheels

Braineack 01-19-2011 10:54 AM

There are places that wont ship without cardboard. I've been hassled for shipping wheel/tires with just cardboard on each flat side. I'm pretty sure it was UPS.

I know! I cant believe UPS even took them.

If I had to guess I would say I've shipped roughly 10 sets of wheels and/or tires. It would have been so much easier to just slap stickers on them, but I would never do that to the guy that bought them from me. Knowing very well that UPS would throw them around like it was a fucking game.

The wheels are pretty beat up looking. I'm going to take them to my tire guy now and hopefully he can mount them without a hitch. Assuming I can fit everything in the Taurus.

The UPS shipper's book says you can ship tires bare, but doesn't mention wheels....

UPS only covers $100 per shipment by default, did he insure them for $200?

I run into this shit all the time, people think because no preclusion is stated, then it's allowable. They are wrong and UPS never should have accepted those. It's called "negligence" and they're guilty of it.

However you paid so little that you should spraypaint them and deal with it.

mgeoffriau 01-19-2011 11:50 AM

Yeah, if you read that page in the shipper's manual, it's pretty clear that they are listing the items that they allow without packaging -- in other words, the exceptions to the standard policy. If it's not on that page, it shouldn't have been allowed.

EDIT:

Actually....I might be wrong. UPS does in fact have a provision for "Irregularly Shaped Items and Bare Metals". It reads:

Tape the address label on a flat surface of the item being shipped. Cover the label with clear tape. Do not use "flying tags" attached by string or metal. Blunt all sharp or protruding edges with taped-on, corrugated cardboard pieces. Protect the surface of the item as needed. An Additional Handling charge will apply.
So, technically, UPS was right to accept the wheels unpackaged, as they were bare metal and (presumably) had no sharp or protruding edges. The mistake was the seller not protecting the wheels, but we knew that already, and I'm betting that UPS isn't liable for damage on unpackaged "Irregularly Shaped Items and Bare Metal" shipments.

Exactly. Even the bare minimum was too much to ask. Jesus christ. :vash:

I already wrote the guy a PM saying that the wheels were shipped unboxed and got beat up. Also that his mention of "curb rash" would be better described as "curb gouge". I said I was taking them to the tire shop and that hopefully they aren't bent and mount up without a hitch.

My tire buddy told me that one needed a lot of weight but that it should be ok and to just slap it on the rear. So as long as the car drives straight down the road when I put them on tonight, I'll be happy.

I guess I expect everyone to pack and ship things like I do, and maybe I expect to much sometimes, but this was just dick. No effort what so ever...and for the record, UPS is the worst company I have EVER dealt with in my life. :vash: So I'm not even going to waste my time with them.

BTW Pusha, I dropped the wenis dryer off while I was waiting for the tires to get mounted.

Sweeeeeet! Last year I owed $1200 income tax, this year I get back $1000. I could REALLY use $1000 right now too, pay off some of my medical expenses.

kotomile 01-20-2011 03:07 AM

I get to file for my $1300 lean-burn tax credit this year, woot.

NA6C-Guy 01-20-2011 03:29 AM

Shit, make that $1100. This is the first year EVER that I haven't owed the fucking state. I get $130 from their asses. That should allow me to pay off my nagging smaller medical bills, leaving only the one large one that I will chip away at $50 at a time for the next 5 years. Should even have enough left over to get my D90 like I have been wanting. Not a bad return for only sacrificing ~$80 a paycheck. Almost don't miss it, so it's nice to see it all come back in one lump at the end of the year. Had I worked all last year instead of only 6 months, I would have had double the return and double the niceness.

Yesterday I reached two milestones.

1) I turned 40 (meh).

2) I legally purchased marijuana across a counter at a retail establishment and received an itemized receipt for said transaction. With a little accounting magic I may even be able to write it off next year, since it is a medical expense after all.

I love this country.

kotomile 01-20-2011 01:28 PM

Do they actually use "street" names for their legal pot? Purple haze, etc.?

Shit. They got more "street name" pot than the streets have!!

Hopefully this law will eventually find its way across the entire US.

matthewdesigns 01-20-2011 01:56 PM

Yeah. They had about 40 varieties and it was all named by the strain/cross just like you'd buy off the street. Here's a link to where I went: http://legalmarijuanadispensary.com/...Itemid=118&i=1

It lists all their strains, what "edibles" they have, prices, etc. It's the craziest thing I've ever seen. The place reeked when I got into the lobby, let alone the actual showroom. And since the stuff has to be grown locally by law, you can drive through some industrial areas in town and literally smell the stuff in the air near the grow facilities. The local liberal newspaper is full of ads each week for doctor referrals and "dispensaries", and they even do a quarterly insert that's 20 pages long detailing industry news, etc. There are 3 dispensaries within a 10min walk from my office, and about 130 across town.

ZX-Tex 01-20-2011 02:46 PM

I travel to Boulder from time to time and have seen a few dispensaries there. It is a bit strange to see those coming from Texas where for the most part it is regarded as an evil weed.

Welcome to my world. Minus the receipt and write offs. :fawk:

matthewdesigns 01-20-2011 03:25 PM

I've never been over to the Netherlands, but friends of mine have. It's been a long time coming in the US, but we're still quite a ways away from open use as in coffee bars over your way. Even here in Colorado the law does not allow for open exhibition of the use of medical marijuana (mmj as it's called), it's supposed to be used in-home. Of course, unless you are caught in the act it's difficult to apply the law. Colorado is apparently going to try to create a baseline intoxication limit for mmj use so they can hit you with DWIs if you are driving around. Not a bad thing IMHO, but it's going to be difficult to find a happy medium since tolerances are all over the map from one user to the next.

NA6C-Guy 01-20-2011 04:51 PM
