My spine is usually fine. It was only the lugging 25 lbs of beer up the hills in central Central Park that left the region of the L5 / sacrum a bit sore.

Normally it's just my knees and ankles. I wear Reebok hexaffect sneakers which are extremely comfortable, tape the ***** of my feet to relieve friction (3M green painter's tape in the 2" width works wonders here) and maintain a reasonably long stride and good pronation. And I'm not going for speed here, averaging 16-17 minutes / mile, which is a pretty pace. Just feeling my age, I think...

 

Also, don't give meth to toddlers. It's bad.

 

"Comfortable sneakers" ≠ "Quality fitted walking shoes"

Also, don't go for "long stride", but rather "comfortable pace", especially when adding weight. If you go for "long stride" which does equate to speed, then you really are setting yourself up for a cyclists maxim scenario.

Also, get a daypack with a waistband for future load-carrying purposes. Your shoulders should only stabilize the load; let your legs do the carrying.

A proper backpack with a real hip belt makes a big difference. I had one from Brenthaven that I used for 12 years. With laptop, charger, books etc it regularly weighed 30 lbs. Options for such bags (professional-ish looking, yet with a real hip strap, and a laptop compartment) were much more limited in 1998 than they are today. Plus the spread of hipster-ism means that you can go with pretty much any bag you want and still appear "professional." Especially in the midst of New York.

 

Given that I tried on about a dozen pair before settling on the Reeboks (and this is impressive, given how few stores stock anything at all in size 14 beyond the latest obnoxiously-colored sneakers which bear the name of some basketball player), what you you mean by a "quality fitted walking shoe?" The hexaffect is technically described a running shoe (not an extremely expensive one, but none the less...) but I'd assume that a running shoe would also suffice for walking?




I normally use the bike for grocery-runs, I just happened to have my lightweight backpack with me when I decided to get some beer. This is not a typical use-case. Forget that I mentioned it.

 

Start with a full-service shoe store that does analysis, fitting, and custom insoles/orthotics. Trying to eek out performance by simply slipping on the most comfortable shoe on the shoe rack is like trying to eek out performance by driving the most comfortable car from the showroom straight to the race track. The suspension in that car is designed for mass market appeal to get it off of the showroom floor; it's no different from your insoles which may be super comfortable without providing any actual musculoskeletal support.

 

Get some toe shoes.

Different purpose, different construction. Personally if I walk around all day in my running shoes, my feet get sore and my legs get tired. Everyone is different, of course. But shoes are like tires, different use cases have different solutions.

Finding someone knowledgeable is the hardest part. I'd try an REI or similar and look at their trekking shoe options.
