Two quick things on this whole Barber topic.

1) **** hair. I've been shaving my noggin every morning in the shower for about the last 20 years now; it takes me all of about a minute at this point and my head looks fabulous every day.

2) I value "old school" in everything, including barbers for my sons. I take them to my buddy Farrell's Old School/Rockabilly shop ("Pomade and Tonic") here in Jax. When I first met Farrell he was working out of another shop, the quintessential "time capsule" type with a faded portrait of JFK on the wall and decor that probably hadn't changed in 25 years.

The guy was wearing a vintage suit (while cutting hair) the first time i met him, and as we chatted he noted that back in "the good old days" that it was cool to be fashionable and well-groomed, and lamented how now it's "cool" to be a slob, and that wanting to look sharp has become looked at as an almost feminine characteristic.

When he struck out on his own he built a sort of updated version of that shop, with antique barber chairs, a pool table and a "courtesy bar" where you can enjoy a complementary cocktail while shooting some pool as you wait your turn. The whole scene is pretty cool. Anybody in the North Florida area who appreciates "the old way" should check it out. Get yourself a straight razor shave with steamed towels; if you've never had one before you'll really enjoy it.

Your leaving?

Bummer I was looking forward to our annual BBQ next month. I guess I'll have to find someone else to drink beer with and ponder the imponderables.

On Thursday, yeah.

Sucks, and I'm gonna miss this place, but there's just no reason for me to remain here anymore.

Where are you headed? Back to Florida, or elsewhere?

buzzcut crowd: I find this hairstyle representative of a certain demographic. I'm not sure what it is or why (and of course all individuals who I know personally are generally excepted) but it bugs me.

It has nothing to do with military service, but I find that a quick and dirty clipper-do tends to lean too far into trashy for my flavor. On some people (JT, batman, etc) it can look chic, but with your average tattoo-shop-art black tshirt and camo cargo shorts, I'm over it.

and yet, would bang:

Precisely.

A buzz-cut is appropriate for military service, and inappropriate for all other situations, in the same way that a tuxedo is appropriate for a wedding or for saving the world from S.P.E.C.T.R.E, but inappropriate for jury duty, bowling, etc.

As a former professional vagrant, I completely understand the need to move on.

I packed the Uhaul and moved from city/state to city/state 13 times between the ages of 19 and 35. If I didn't have a wife, kids and a mortgage I'd be overlanding through South Amercia right now.

Good luck on your adventures.

I can understand that, to some degree - especially the "quick and dirty" portion. For some of us, it's as much a preemptive strike against thinning/balding as it is a fashion statement.

I'm a no-guard-with-clippers-DIY guy, myself. If I don't clip it every week, it does start to border on unkempt. That kind of sounds weird considering my hair is still probably shorter than anyone but Pinky's at that point, but it looks like it is... less intentional at that length.

That place sounds awesome. If I didn't have to cut my hair so frequently, I'd use a place like that.

You've got me beat. I've only done the long-haul five times to date, getting ready for #6.

Buzz cut is also appropriate for police/fire. Guys that go from helmet to no helmet many times a day and don't feel like having helmet hair.

Also appropriate for guys prematurely balding and don't want to look like a child molester.

I have mixed feelings here.

My brother-in-law is a sheriff's deputy in a small Florida town. He wears his hair in a military-style buzzcut, and frankly, it makes him look like a wannabe. (Perhaps it's that he's in his 30s and doesn't have the physique to go with it.)

Really, this is the only acceptable range of police haircuts for a man:

(I'll also accept the Dirty Harry, but only for detective or higher rankings.)

For a fireman, the hair should be short-ish, but long enough to be styled and teased:
