If you could, that would be awesome. It really wouldn't be too hard of a task for me to remove one assembly to make a copy into cardboard, but I'd like to avoid that if possible. Just unbolting the two top nuts on each one and pulling the suspension down would be so much easier. Slide the spacer in, bolt it back up, done.

 

I looked for them for at least 3-5 minutes and determined I didn't want to spend more time digging around. Partly because my cat box smelled real bad and is right next to where they might be.

Thanks anyway. I've started some real CSI estimating and it's looking promising so far. Only missing link is inner diameter. It's a guess based on pictures of the FM spacers, and the amount of material between the stud holes and the inner diameter opening. I think my inner hole is just a little too small, because on the FM pictures, the angle from the outer straight legs coming off the stud hole radius looks like maybe 100-105 degrees. Mine looks more like 95-100 degrees. So I think with an inner diameter of maybe .25" more (and extending the outer diameter to match), I'd be right on the money. Or at least close enough to work.

mt bros, I am probably in the market for a job change. however I live somewhere that is not my best source of job. I am strong in the ways of product development and design and have inklings into operations and product strategery.

what's in the dc metro? I think I have one of the 5 jobs that fits what I like and I am at a dead end here.

What would be an upgrade? Same job duties but with a pay raise? Different job duties (e.g. more responsibility via managing) with the same money? Same money but in a different field?

I would start with answering that question which will help determine which metaphorical off-ramp to take: one that puts you on a beltway or one that takes you in an entirely different direction all together.

 

well here's my problem: I have been doing this job (mechanical engineer/design engineer type) for a while without significant advancement or promotion.

Last year, I had finally succeeded in forcing my will upon my superiors to allow me to do some studying in our operations (ie we have zero) and was basically hacking and slashing a position for myself out of our firm. I was to be the head of manufacturing operations. That would have started officially as a full time job June 1 but other things came up.

staff reduction. I was in on this somewhat as an advisor as potential future ops guy and guy-whose-been-here-the-longest. I essentially strongly suggested that we keep our quality guy and make him head of mfg and since our company couldn't support a full time ops guy in addition to a manufacturing manager, I would back off on the ops role "for the good of the business".

The owners eventually agreed this was wise and brought up to me that since my path to operations was cut short and no longer an option, would I be willing to consider staying in the engineering (R&D/PD whatever) and moving into a director role. I told them probably but my whole being was geared for something very different. Still, I told them I'd be interested of course.

Now I am very mentally prepared to lead our engineering efforts and I have vision and ideas and management skills that have previously been lacking (long story, but one of the owners is also my boss and he is not a manager of any type).

So effectively I would be moving into a promising role with more challenge and responsibility (good) but in a small company with minimal people under me (meh) and we are struggling this year, though we have done well in prior years (bad).

Still, that role is AT LEAST, if nothing else, something I can proudly put on my resume before moving on.

My fear, however, is that it wont happen before it's time to move on.

Which leaves me sitting here trying to be proactive about figuring out what to do, where to do it, and how to get there all before I'm forced to.

To directly answer your question:
I need at least 90% of my salary.
For that, I'd probably take a similar job but need room to grow.
IDEALLY I would like more responsibility, challenge, learning environment, and a place to pour my experience and technical learning ability to make cool ****.
I'd love more money, but that is not a primary goal.

type of business doesn't matter a lot. pretty much anywhere that builds a product that I can fondle is going to work well. I prefer working with products that I can see people using rather than inanimate boxes.

Hopefully, just typing all of that out helped with the thought process. It definitely sounds like you have given it a lot of thought and you covered one of the possible suggestions: talking with the current company about finding a new role, even if it is a "horizontal" move.


I understand the idea of limited long-term upside. One thing I have found is that it's easy to assume what is, or what has been, is what will be. But "pas performance is not a guarantee of future results." If there is a way for the current company to grow enough, and you are a part of that, that may create enough space for your role to expand.

Just something to stew on.

Otherwise, it sounds like you should keep your antenna up for other possibilities while continuing to plug away at the current gig (do NOT mentally check out until something else is secur. Because babby.

 

I have mentally checked in and out about 15 times in the last year. I can cope fine. We have a verbal guarantee of a minimum of 60 days notice before we're terminated, which is nice. But it also means when day 1 of 60 comes, I am going to be prepared and armed with a direction and the paperwork to support it.

Currently my hope is that we exist at least a couple more years, I become director of something by the end of Q3 (a rough deadline I was given by an owner for something to happen), and we all live happily ever after.

I really prefer not to leave here with 7 years of experience and no awesome title to show. I may, if given 60 days, request a promotion just to have it.

Holy ****, it's a Crossman V-300 BB pistol. Only made for 2 years (1963, 1964). Pretty rare, as they were not good sellers. I'm seeing gun auctions where these things go for well over $100. Even has the original box.
