I think i used POR15 engine paint. With a brush....would not do that again. Thought I could save some time by brushing instead of spraying. I wish i had taped the whole block up and sprayed it. My last engine i sprayed with whatever white engine enamel was at NAPA.

I went with .0021" on the bottom, because that was what they came out of the box at lol. And then .00185-.0019 for the top ring. A little loose, but should be safe.

So don't use the tool I have that was meant for the job, that lets me set the stretch exactly to spec? Thats a good idea.

 

When a stud doesnt want to come out....turn it into a nut....and pull the threads out with it.

 

Which head is that? Going to helicoil it?

I think it was cross threaded. Because heat did nothing, and it just yanked the threads right out.

 

That type of sh*t is infuriating...

Nothing like spending 4 hours fixing something that should have taken 5 seconds.

 

I've never actually used a helicoil. So that will be fun.

I'm waiting on the pump from Travis anyways. And haven't heard from him so I probably have all weekend to fix it.

 

Helicoils are awesome. I'm going to helicoil a lot of fasteners on my next engine where strength is a concern. Will do all the aluminum threaded things since those strip easy. They aren't hard to do either, just make sure you are using the correct size drill for the tap it includes, and keep the bit straight. Since you're drilling a cylinder head I would set a mark on how deep to drill into the head so you don't accidentally turn that head into a paperweight.

 

There are still threads deep down it looks like. So I just need to find some helicoils that are long enough.

Well thankfully I take lots of pictures, and have a very observant friend. Can anyone spot the difference?

 

LOL l looked in your photo dump and didn't notice one of the pistons installed 180 out. Good catch, that would be bent valves on startup!
