Just so we're clear. You're still talking about your car, right?

I am going to introduce you two to the correct tool for this job. A step bit. I would have been done with enlarging that hole days ago.

I have a feeling he's trying to get more than 1/4" depth on that "step"

Like, he's literally drilling out the entire fitting to a larger ID, while in situ. Sounds like a terrible job.

I could mail you the bit/tap I used if you want. Though you're putting the bung in the middle of the pan iirc so that may not work..

OMG it never even occurred to either of us that we could use an off the shelf bit...

I mean I know how you like to play with your lathe. It would not surprise me to be like hey I can just make a tool to do what you need.

I was originally going to just cut down a step drill for him like ive done in the past, but there was concern with wandering and not drilling straight. Since Aidan is pushing the limits of science, metallurgy, and physics (aka- thin wall on the AN fitting), we wanted a pilot. Then realizing a major side benefit of the pilot is keeping chips out of the pan. Twas an easy decision to make a custom bit. Its not like I have time for this ****, so it wasn't really to just play with the lathe. I have bushings to make.

I think that's the longest I've gone without working on the Miata in over a year...instead I worked on 2 bikes, another Miata, and a truck. oil bung is drilled out, pan is flushed with mineral spirits. Going to let it air out for a while then reassemble.

Track day on Thursday, which is good, haven't been on the track since June. Am probably rusty.

Did you pull the motor and take the pan off the car? or did you just open up the drain plug to flush?

All on the car. If the motor was coming out I would have welded on an AN 12 bung instead of drilling out the -10

FWIW another oil drain data point... I measured the OEM drain on the stock turbo on my 1j and its 0.75" ID at the smallest point.

It doesn't smoke like it's rings.

Last thing is an oil pressure regulator on the turbo.

Do it! I ordered one almost immediately after I saw it on the Turbosmart site. Honestly, it seems like a no brainer to me.

I am going to mount mine directly to the valve cover with a large bore restrictor from the VVT actuator housing. The drain fitting is a bit of a pickle though. I have not been able to locate a -4an orb male to straight NPT male.
