But in all honesty, I see no reason to change. The interface architecture which was developed for Windows 95 (start menu, control panel, desktop, etc) really does work quite fabulously in a desktop context. I see no advantage whatsoever to the Vista / 7 interface which attempts to abstract the majority of the available applications and services from the user, nor the Win8 interface which attempts to turn your desktop PC into a smartphone.

To be fair, I do draw a distinction between emulating the INTERFACE of an old OS vs. trying to run the actual old OS itself. One problem that you start to run into with old operating systems is driver support. So, in reality, you probably wouldn't want to load an actual copy of Win98 onto a brand-new ultrabook, as it's highly probable that the requisite drivers simply do not exist for 90% of the hardware in the machine. It would run, but you'd be stuck at 640x480, with no AHCI support, no networking of any kind, etc.

The fact that Win7 is really the first consumer-grade release which supports 64 bit addressing AND has reasonable driver support* is really about the only reason that I've upgraded my main PCs to it from XP.

* = There was a 64 bit version of XP Pro, and I tried it on one of my machines. Sadly, it doesn't work well on desktop PCs, since 32 bit drivers and DLLs are incompatible with it and it was such a niche OS that very few vendors wrote 64 bit versions of anything even remotely related to graphics, audio, etc for it. XP64 was really a server-only OS.

Hmm, I thought that was just a SR20 clearance kind of thing, I'm pretty sure its finished and all that. I'll check when I get home from work. Maybe it is shipping damage.

Hey guys, sorry for the slow response, I've been crazy busy.

I got a promotion from eBay so ordered some of the other small-ish parts of the build. 2.5" piping and intercooler kit, HKS BOV, inlets and outlets for the SR20, and MXT-L (yeah I did it!), and a cheap boost gauge and some gauge pods.

The wastegate definitely looks damaged. Funny thing is since this turbo was just 100% rebuilt you would think there would be some marks on it from being dropped, but it looks like it was powder coated after the damage. I really don't want to put the whole turbo on just to find out my wastegate is screwed... time to buy a new wastegate and yell at the seller of this turbo?

Also, I got the manifold and a used BEGI Downpipe. Only problem is when I test fit everything together I can't for the life of me figure out how the downpipe is supposed to work with this turbo unless the turbo is top mounted - even the usual horizontal FM/BEGI log style won't work. Am I missing something silly or is this downpipe for a different application?

What manifold is that? It does not look like a standard BEGI/FM replacement log manifold. Which means it will not work work with a BEGI downpipe at all.

It was built by SKmetalworks from the forum. Well I figured it would need some modifying, but if you **** your head when looking at the picture, you'll see that even the standard Log Manifold style wouldn't work... I would have some serious side pipes! :P

This is sort of why most people just buy a BEGI/FM manifold and downpipe combo just so they do not have to deal with the hassle of having a custom downpipe made.

If I were a betting man, I would say the downpipe is from a BEGi S4 system (or nearest ebay equivalent)

Ohhh right. So that would explain the 90 degree difference in the sidemount vs. top mount. Dang it! I didn't see that one coming.

So looks like either sell the DP and go custom or keep the DP and get a top mount manifold for the 1.6... which is rare used or WAY expensive new. Sucks.

Hmm u want top mount why not drill the holes and flip the manifold? From memory begis s4 manifold was upside down compatible. You'll still have to do a new downpipe though but if you want top mount vs bottom mount that should work.

Oops sorry I mis-typed meant bottom mount! Flipping the manifold would be cool just for the top mount look, though

I'm thinking the DP will just get sold in favor of a different one to work with this manifold. Only thing is, I think I might still have to get a custom DP for this angle mounted manifold and the car being a 1.6....

The main problem with a custom dp is ensure the person that does it for you knows wtf they are doing... theres lots of tight corners there and a shitty job will rattle everywhere.

Yeah thats why I've never really wanted to go that way. This DP gets me tempted to just order a bottom mount S4 manifold, but they are just so expensive!
