My compressor housing has come back from the ebay merchant. Very upstanding merchant, they shippped me the turbo without being polished as part of the price (it was supposed to have been). I sent it back and they returned it polished. Just took them a while.

Looks so nice! Even better looking in person. Yay.

It's a Hydra, it will most likely break before it ever does control boost.

We will just have agree to disagree on the cheap, fast, reliable statement, Fae in my opinion, is a perfect example of it. He has changed direction multiple times due to cheap choices and fails due to those choices. latest example the cheap *** MBC, will it work? sure for a while, then it will fail or he will talk about boost creep or lack of boost that will invariably be traced back to the ebay MBC.

Quality parts cost money. Can you build a 10 or 11 second miata for cheap? Probably but it is not going to last. What about a quality track car that spends more time on the track than on jack stands? Doubt it.

It seems to me, from the threads I have read here, it takes $$$ if you want a fast, reliable, basically trouble free car, regardless of make, model, or swap. Ask Sav what he has $ wise in his car, and he does the work himself.

My project has cost me more than I care to admit, as a matter of fact I am not sure exactly how much I have in my hot rod miata, but I could drive it across country right now without one concern, and I would guess that it is one of the faster projects on this site. Now it may not be a miata power plant, but there are several different 1K ebay turbo specials available for my engine, but I chose to spend 1.5 times that just on my snail. Why? two words, quality, and reliability.

Fae is learning, an example is his recent brake purchase. You want to find weak links in your build, track your car on the edge for 20 or 30 minutes and I guarantee you will find things to fix.

Fae I think I remember you saying something about track tires recently. RA-1's are a great choice, but not full tread, get them shaved to 4/32 and you will have great tires that will give you many hours of track use. The RA-1 is probably the best bang for the buck r-dot tire available for the miata.

I know my build thread is a little long but I haven't made cheap choices and fails. I don't expect you or anyone else to memorize my entire build thread history, but today, I have good reliable results which unfortunately for my wallet do not rely on cheap parts. Some characteristics of my turbo kit have not worked out for me, and have caused me much much frustration, but that's not my fault. When I bought it, the S5 was the best "big power" miata option available.

Frankly, I'm sick of people saying that my ride is a pile of **** because it's not. I've put a lot of time, effort, labor, and yes, money into my car to achieve decent results. I've openly shared my trials and tribulations here to document both the learning experience and the frustrations which any noob like myself who embarks on a project like this will encounter.

Here is my car doing part of it's normal duty: laying vacuum in 10mph rush hour traffic today while commuting on the Washington DC Beltway. So far I have 5000 miles on my built motor. All is well.

 

Fae, first of all I have never called your car a piece of **** . I in no way meant to infer that either, if that is how my comments have come across, I apologize. I have enjoyed your build, though some of your choices have left me scratching my head. I understand that some of us are more talented than others when it comes to fabrication, or execution of design ideas. Some of the members here have been working on cars longer than some of the members here has been alive. It's only natural and expected to see different ability levels within the community. Not that my opinion matters, but I think that you have one of the more enjoyable build threads here, and successful builds, despite your trials and tribulations. Without a doubt you have one of the nicer looking cars on MT. Again, it was never my intention to insult you or your car.

I've finally started to get used to the power and have also started to pick up the speed in the turns again. I am very excited about the brakes. My current pads are toast and I'll be able to drive much harder with the BBK. The MTs do have great grip- superior to the RS2 but seriously, if I hit a bump they bounce all over the place. I would like to get the XIDAs but I really can't afford the $2000 now.

I got both ebay boost controllers today- both the NXS and the purplespec. I may try out the NSX tomorrow.

Regarding the Hydramist in the mail, FM has really come through for me on this. I bought it 4 years ago with the Hydra and didn't install it until this year because I was intimidated by all the wires. Anyways, I installed it, and **** did not work. I sent the "brain" back to jolly ole England where Mr. Aquamist Richard himself looked at it, "fixed" it, and returned it. Still no worky. Learned how to troubleshoot basic electronics and troubleshot the **** for 20 hours or so with the assistance of FM, Aquamist, Element. Fixed/figured out nothing. The problem was that the failsafes would not work. FM has a "known good" unit at their shop and they agreed to swap out the complete system for my defective one free of charge. Going by the book, this Hydramist is way out of warranty but they are still helping me out. Big thank you to them for being willing to do this.

If it still doesn't work, I will be going with a snow or labonte failsafe. Either that or put in a fuel cell and fuel pump in my trunk and use real fuel injectors. Reaching my power goals will depend on meth.

 

Holy ****. That's one hell of a receipt. Shoulda picked up Orian's 11.75" kit, he just posted it. Probably wouldn't of saved too much overall though.

Hot weather is great because of more tire grip but bad for boost. Sniff.

 

Did you buy the rs-3 for track use only?
