Ok, so the injectors sold last night and that opens up the budget a bit to go with something ridiculous to support my future E85 obsession. I know everyone recommends and runs ID1000s when stepping up to a "supersize me" injector, but I been doing some reading. Specifically this: Everything You Never Wanted to Know About Alcohol - Injector Dynamics A good read for anyone interested in the intricacies of E85 composition, to be sure.

It does bring up a lot of really good points. Seeing as I'm coastal (fog, moisture) AND my car sits for weeks (or months ) at a time, injector corrosion is probably something I should think about. In our reality, how big a deal is this? I know we have a bunch of guys running E85 on random *** injectors and I've not SEEN anyone post up complain about such things as stuck injectors, but its obvious its an issue and it DOES happen. If you have been following this thread for any length of time, you know where this is going...

Of course Injector Dynamics has a product that will address my building paranoia: the ID 1300!

It is compatible with all known fuels, and will stand up to the corrosive nature of alcohol better than any injector on the market.

While the ID1300 was designed with an eye towards ethanol fueled engines, we have accounted for the occasional need to convert back to gasoline. The ID1300 has a minimum fuel mass compatible with gasoline use, and will provide exceptional idle and cruise behavior under these conditions. In addition to its multi-fuel capabilities, the compact body of the ID1300 allows fitment in 200+ applications, making it the most versatile injector in our lineup.
Sounds ideal, right? I need to do a bit more reading and figure out exactly what "minimum fuel mass compatible with gasoline use" means, but these look ideal for trouble free ethanol use. I shall report back after asking stupid questions in other places.

On to other things...

Doing more reading, I know I need a good fuel filter to protect my injector investment. Bosch recommends a 5 for the EV14 but most of the OEM stock location replacement filters on the market are rated for *30-40. This is a problem. ID actually recommends 6-10 for their products but most of the filter elements this fine are built from non ethanol friendly cellulose.

Enter our friends at Fuelab:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/fue-81831-1/

That's the Fuelab 818 series compact filter. It has an ethanol friendly fiberglass element rated for 6 and comes with convenient -6AN fittings. It'll also flow 200 GPH (or 750+LPH) aka 3x more than my fuel pump can flow. I shall purchase this and mount it under the hood directly before the fuel rail. Easy-peasy!

I will continue to use a factory replacement filter in the stock location because it will make an excellent "pre-filter" to keep the big stuff out of the fancy Fuelab element. At $15 its really not a hardship.

* It turns out the WIX-33538 factory replacement filters that I've been replacing annually for the last 5~6 years are rated at 20. After a brief search of the interwebs, that's actually one of the best Miata replacement filter I can find. Most manufacturers don't list ratings anywhere, or offer a generic range. Yikes!

You should get both those and have them gold plated.

Also have you gotten your fuel lines diamond encrusted yet? If not, go home you poverty stricken peasant.

Ball hard G, Ball hard. Then get really frustrated because nothing cooperates, enjoy your car for a bit, change things, frustration ensues, blow your head, wait 2 months after tasting your car in its peak glory.

I wanna go choo choo!....*grabs shower beer to comfort himself*

I didn't know that about the fuel filtration requirements on ev14....hmmmm

I'm running a Wix filter on my ID 1000s, that's it. Hmmmm. Maybe I should get that filter for my car.

I feel you Jeff, I've been on this roller coaster since I bought the rotrex. I've had pretty much 2 of everything up to this point. Actually 3 of some things.

Yeap, everyone talks about injectors but I've never seen anyone talk about filtration. From the linked article:

So if you are using the WIX 20 filter you are 'probably fine' but I hate being 'probably' anything. The guys at Injector Dynamics obviously know WTF they are talking about when it comes to injectors so I'm happy to take their recommendations for filtration as well. The Fuelab 818 filter I linked is $130 and 6 replacement elements are $32. I'm happy to spend the $45 annually to replace the WIX and the 6 element and never worry about my injectors. I worry too much already. You've seen my hairline, you know these things.

Hm. What is it that needs to be filtered out? Is it just cheap that has crap in it, or everything?

I just have a Mazda filter before my ID1000s.

I honestly have no idea, I assume particulate matter. I'm not Joe Perez so I don't have the numbers handy, but I would image the fuel industry has some minimum particulate requirement they must adhere to. It's not the supplied fuel I'd be worried about, but the transfer trucks, pipelines, underground tanks and dispensing nozzles I'd be worried about. Lots of ways for junk to get into the system before it hits my fuel tank.

Apples to oranges but I know our Cummins diesel systems on the equipment at work run a 7-25 primary and a 2-5 secondary filter so there is obviously legitimate concerns from the manufacturers about fuel quality and/or contamination. I'm sure filtration is more of an issue when you are running 2000psi at the injector, but you get the idea.

I'm glad to see I can spread my paranoia

The problem is overthinking things. I think at some point in my previous builds I would overthink things so much that I would literally change setups and change setups and never actually ever enjoy my car or even install anything ever, because I'd be worried that my setup sucks and I should change it.

Jeff knows what I'm talking about. Gordon is actually doing it right now. I mean, in the perfectest world, are ID1300's awesome? yes. Is that super fancy filter awesome? yes. Is a EFR awesome? yes. What about an ARtech mani? Yep. What about a FAB9 sidewinder? Yup.

And then tomorrow a sick newer cooler thing comes out, and all of a sudden we should probably just use that.

I dunno. It's a disease. It's a sickening slipery slope. Sometimes the lines are blurred. But SOMEWHERE you need to learn to draw the line on where you stop.

I just want to see this awesome assortment of parts together and running. Same for me wanting to see El Heffe's glorious beast on the road and being enjoyed.

I'm running the most mediocre turbo setup known to man right now: stock MSM. I'm running ID725's and DW200 on an otherwise stock mazda system (though I did replace the oem fuel filter with another new one). On paper it's so mediocre. And yet, I love it so so so so very much that I don't even give a crap about cooler parts. I'm just happy.

Stop overthinking and be happy?

I hope I'm not coming across as a downer, lol.
I love both your cars and builds. Yesterday I trolled an srt8 challenger by beating him while shooting a big fiery backfire right into his face as I passed him using FFS. This after he smirked at me at the light as he gunned it. I was grinning so hard I didn't even care that my car is only running low 200whp

Probably one of your best post sir.

And yes, I agree with every bit of it, and I'm guilty too. I spent a lot of time designing and building an elaborate, computer controlled 26 stage WI system (yeah....) and it worked, but then I went to a simple 3 stage simple for simplicity, and at the end of the day I ended up turning it off...... So now it's weight in the car slowing me down! Time wasted.

I know for sure that my car isn't the best, it has some sweet parts and some that suck, but hey, it's running right now and it's more fun to drive vs just wrenching on it all the time. I like building the car though, but I get carried away.

Sadly, everything Vlad has mentioned; is something you really only get a clear picture of once you go down the rabbit hole. You need a reality backhand to the face at how frustrating your car is, and how little you are enjoying your "hobby". Maybe I'm just stubborn and can't learn from others, as I need to stick my hand in the fire to learn a lesson once.

I'm at the point Vlad is at. I just want to enjoy my car. Sure I bought some more " crack" while I'm rebuilding my head, but it is just so I don't have to worry about **** anymore. Take it to the tuner, pick it up, drive. I know something will break, but that is going to happen, Murphey's Law and what not.

Vlad's post needs to be in the read me section for newbies.
