I've spent way too much money. I mean, $600 won't even buy the wheels I ordered. I'm a wasteful failure.

 

 

Keep in mind I'm headed out for only my second damp track session when I say this, but in all the years I've tracked, I haven't wanted the added weight, ugliness, complication, or benefits of ABS.

 

Abs is useless.

 

I have 3 or 4 flatspotted sets of autox tires that would say otherwise.

In all seriousness, I'm torn between simplicity and having the safety net.

I'm also realizing that I'm feeling a little afraid to drive aggressively again. I need to go drive and get over this fear. Serious PTSD after cartwheeling off the road with my dad :(

Ha, so after today's track day Ed, I wouldn't really blame you for wanting ABS, although I still wouldn't suggest you install it.

Kinda wanted it and was actually thinking of this thread during our first two sessions, where I managed a 2:15 and 2:07 respectively, before the track finally warmed up and I did a 1:43 followed by a 1:36 before my coils started acting up. ABS couldn't of been further in the back of my mind after those first two sessions though.

 

See here's the thing... I get my front upright from G and buy a new rear upright, and with the shell already stripped it really wouldn't be that much work, would it? I mean, I'd swap EVERYTHING. The MSM master and booster, brake lines, module, etc. It'd be a matter of bolting it in. The uprights and such already have to completely come apart anyway so it's no extra work there.

It seems the greatest portion of the work would be the wiring. I'd pay someone to do it, not my thing at all, but Codrus' thread linked above really documents it well.

It just seems like a no-brainer if i want to deal with the extra complexity.

 

If you've got a stripped shell then you have to put all those parts in anyway -- it doesn't take any more work to put the ABS-capable ones.

The parts that require additional work are:

- making/installing the wiring. This is time-intensive, but not really hard.
- moving the windshield washer bottle
- connecting a wire to the ABS light on the instrument cluster
- debugging it when it's all put together and it doesn't work

Since an ABS system without power falls back to being a normal brake system, you could install all the bits and do the wiring/etc at some point in the future and the only downside is that the car would be a few pounds heavier from carrying the ABS hydraulic unit around.

If you're going to do it, make sure you get high quality stranded teflon wire, a good ratcheting crimp tool and some weather-sealed heat-shrink butt splices for the harnesses so that they're reliable. Plastic loom and high quality electrical tape (I like 3M) clean things up a lot too.

Thanks for the input Ian. I'm putting the MSM cluster in, so it'll already have the wire, and I have the whole MSM wiring harness as well, so Ican just pull the ABS wiring out of that and use it. Yes I clipped the wiring on both front corners but that should make things a lot easier. I'll have to read your thread closer.

 

Ed you can have my abs-compatible bottle. I have the cappuccino bottle now.

The wire doesn't exist in the 10ae harness though, afaik.

I also have an MSM washer bottle, we all apparently have MSM washer bottles.

 

Or just get rid of your washer bottle #becauseracecar

 

I've never needed mine, tossed it first thing. I get far less rain then you and don't drive it in the rain so...my input is worthless.
