That's about right, if not bordering on a good deal.

 

When I'd priced out buying parts and getting the work done most of my research led me to expect somewhere between $300-400 of labor, based off of what I'd seen other pay. I didn't make a list of threads though.

 

Damn. I should have researched more. Oh well, I'm committed to this so that's what I'm doing. He said it could well be less than that, but to plan for around $300. Guy was patient with my noobishness, he'll get my business.

Just gotta wait for the next paycheck.........

Oh and I'm on my way to FedEx to pick up a package..............

 

That's pretty good price. I can swap the ring and carrier, but it takes about 1-2 hours of careful measuring. And they're charging about another hour to swap and measure the pinion. Or spend an hour dropping the diff a year or so from now to save $300 now.

 

His exact words were "it's $105 an hour, so if it takes him an hour it'll be $105. If it takes him 3 hours it'll be $315." I told him $105 is peachy, $315 is not possible at the moment, and he said it'd be best to expect a few hundred though it could come in lower.

So I'll go ahead and do my diff bushings and assemble the rear end as much as I can today, then I'll just focus on the front for the rest of the day.

R&R of a differential

It's not that difficult, but it is a pain-in-the-***. And nearly impossible if you don't have the correct measuring instruments.

 

Its easy to forget how much you spent when it was a couple months ago. I'm jelly of your being closer, mine are here on Weds. So, they're on the car already right?

That writeup covers setting the backlash on the ring gear, it does not cover setting the pinion gear depth.

I paid a local rear end shop (literally, their name is "Rear End Specialities") $250 to do it. I brought in the diff with the aluminum rear cover bit already removed and all the other parts from Mazdacomp. Labor rates are pretty high around here, I would expect it should be less in Oregon. OTOH, if the shop hasn't done enough to be confident how long it'll take...

While you've got the diff out, check to seek if the damper weight on the companion flange is broken:

This. I haven't been hoarding, but I bought it long enough that it seems like gifts arriving in the mail.

 

I just realized I ought to share a positive customer service story that I neglected to share.

We all know the 15X9 6ULs were delayed considerably from the initial estimation. Anyone surprised by this needs a reality check. BUT... When they finally arrived, we hit a snag.

I got an email from Emilio saying that the factory mislabeled most of their nickel 15X9's -- they were labeled 9's but were, in fact, 8's. He could no longer fulfill the orders he had taken.

Rather than delaying yet again, he instructed me to order from Good-Win Racing and he would refund my purchase price. I received an immediate refund INCLUDING my club orange discount, allowing me the exact amount to order them full-price from Good-Win. I placed my order with Good-Win and had the wheels within a few days.

I was impressed with how that was handled. Emilio was apologetic and helpful.

My tires will be here tomorrow
