Any particular reasoning behind your hand shuffling?

Picked up some cheap wheels that are a little wider to help reduce sidewall squirm and in impart a little bit more stability and feel. Secondhand 15 by 6.5 Konig helium wheels will be retired from the spare wheel stack. I got entirely too many spare wheels.

So I put the Hoosier SM7 205's on the new 9in Koenig Helix and mounted two on one side of the car last night. I didn't roll the car forward and backward to settle it so probably slightly higher than actual ride height in these pictures. I also didn't check the air so there's probably too much in the tires right now. But this is what it look like last night and this morning as I was leaving. I think it'll do fine and it will allow me the opportunity to also fit 225 and maybe 245 at some point if I come across some.

Stretching those tires made you look 5 years younger. At least.

My old girlfriend just left in the arms of another man. But she's happy and so is he. I neglected her for many years. She'll be better off where she's going

I thought she left months ago.

I hear he's signed up for couples shuffleboard. That's big down there right?
|
So, I did a thing.
Actually, a couple of things. I bought a MiataCage weld-in full rollcage kit. I'm going to have to take out my Hard Dog rollbar, door bars, seats, carpet, dash, and other things to put it in. This will be interesting. Additionally, I determined my 6 speed needs to come out. It isn't blown up but has likely partially "un-pressed" 4th gear from itself. 4th gear is two pieces pressed together and the helical cut of the gears pushes them apart when you apply significant engine power. It makes the gear a little wider than it's supposed to be and this causes a dragging that wants to make the car roll forward when the shifter is still in neutral. It also makes it difficult to shift cleanly. The solution is to disassemble it and have that gear pressed back together and tacked with a welder. Or to buy a K-Miata 6-speed kit and just go ahead and put BMW transmission in it. |
For an explanation of what I believe is going on in the transmission take a look at this video I found online. Start at 2 minutes to skip the intro.

Cleaned out the shed to make room for the Miata to be gutted for the cage. The shop needed to be finished out and insulated over the last few months and air conditioned to make life a little better. Summer's tropical humidity just finally arrived this weekend. Finished just in time.

And what are you doing for a speedometer? New Gauge? GPS based? Reluctor on the driveshaft?

I suck at engineering but I'm pretty good at coming up with bad ideas. I'm going to attempt my own PPF solution. What could possibly go wrong?
But first I will get the roll cage installed and I plan to retain air conditioning. |
Looking forward to seeing this E46 6-speed kit get put to good use.
NA speedo solution is coming guys, I promise! |

Hey hooter,
was it you who was recently talking about a failed fpr on someone's car and the symptoms it was showing before it went? I am doing searches and this thread keeps coming up but I see nothing about FPR's |

Got the detached garage finished enough to allow the car inside. Now with insulation, air conditioning, another big tool box, new shelving, and decent lighting.
Next step take top off, interior out, and rollbar out to mock up the cage. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...508_175641.jpg https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...508_180425.jpg https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...508_175859.jpg |
Nice garage space! That BMW trans swap sounds exciting. I can't wait to see your ppf solution.

I need to swing by some time and check out how that short shift feels. I'm on the fence about it.

Just out of curiosity, how did go about mounting the extinguisher there? I wouldn't place too much trust in that fuel tank cover myself.

Viper car alarm system was spliced into the harness all over the place. What a pain in the ass. Much time wasted reversing the installation. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...512_155814.jpg |

More progress pictures. Never had a dash out before. It was difficult to get to some of the harness connectors and some of the aftermarket wiring was added in unfortunate locations.
FWIW, I figured out that the air conditioning was underperforming partially due to leaking airflow at the junctions on both sides of the evaporator box. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...512_100723.jpg https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...512_101728.jpg https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...512_163527.jpg https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...512_155642.jpg |

Carpet removed. Started gouging and scraping seam sealer out of areas where mounting pads need to be welded. Once seam sealer is removed, paint will be strategically removed as well. I will probably tack weld some of this myself then take it to a good welder to finish.

Sigh. So much work. I'm in over my head.
I guess that's how we learn new things. Greg, you are welcome to come over and check out the shifter or wait until I'm finished with the cage. The shifter and trans will be coming out as soon as I get the K-Miata BMW kit. The shifter will be going up for sale. So will the Hard Dog rollbar. |
Are you sure you're not secretly in the middle of an Exocet build? Those pictures look eerily familiar.
If Greg passes on the shifter I'm definitely interested. |

I'll add another coat today. It's the same color I will paint the exterior. They appropriately call it Daytona blue.

Nice!
I always wondered how difficult it is to mask and paint roll bars, and reach areas light seldom sees. That's a really nice color. |

Another coat. It started thunderstorming while I was painting. I hope it doesn't cause problems with the paint.

Why don't you just paint the interior and rock no carpet ?

Digging that color.

Gonna sell off the other stainless frame rails I took off the car. Strong as hell and great for reducing body flex. The stainless is stronger than the powder coated ones I just put on.

Transmission bolted in. Clutch master installed. Getting the old clutch master pedal e-clip off with the rollcage just to the left of the clutch was tough. Couldn't see and had limited space. And I was laying on my back on the floor.
