I don't recall when that was, but interesting comparison. My research is indeed, in part, federally funded. I think the general idea there is that the US economy (and DoD in turn) benefit from being good at science and engineering at a rate of $3-5 for every $1 spent. Same reason non-classified DoE (national) labs exist. If there were a way to achieve the same result at 100x lower cost I would certainly advocate for it instead.

But if you can take a simple step that has shown no side effects in 99.9% of people, and refuse, then become fatally ill, no sympathy. I will say honestly, I think the side effects of fever/chills/etc, has been dramatically overblown. Everyone I work with used it as an excuse to take two days off. Even the next day my boss was like, "You don't have a fever or anything?" Even my fiance who has an auto-immune disorder and is on two separate drugs for it felt "a little tired" the day after her 2nd injection. And nothing after her third.
