So this is really interesting; The results of the New York State primary election.

On both sides.





On the republican side, no surprise that Trump swept the entire state. Except for Manhattan... his and my hometown. We were the only district in the entire state to nominate (wait for it...) a moderate republican candidate.

On the democratic side, it's both shocking and totally unsurprising. The blue vs. green shading on the map might just as well represent the division between people who have jobs vs. people who are largely dependent upon public assistance. (For those not familiar with New York other than NYC / Long Island, the state is predominantly hillbilly / meth-head outside of the major cities.)

Clearly the level-headed folks still represent a majority of the democratic electorate, however I'm gravely concerned by the margin by which this remains the case.

And on the republican side of the fence, I just don't know...

republicans sweep everything rural and democrats get the dirty cesspool vote. this applies to every state.

 

Not really sure the NY primary told us anything TBH. Both parties had 31-32% of their respective registered voters actually vote. The biggest question is what would the 945K independents (31.5% of the 3M independent votoers in NY State) have impacted had they been allowed to vote, assuming the same turnout percentage.

Remarkable how the primaries and caucuses that serve to narrow the field aren't governed by the same rules/laws in place to field the actual election.

 

Not sure if you understand how primary elections work. This is a contest in which people who a registered democrats get to select one of multiple candidates to be the democratic nominee, and people who are registered republicans get to select one of multiple candidates to be the republican nominee.

In other words, the maps above tell us nothing about democrat vs. republican, only about divisions within the respective parties. (eg: among democrats, do you prefer socialism or Hillary?) The republic vs. democrat vote will happen in the November general election, so you'll need to wait until then to trot out the aforementioned argument.



That said, I'm curious as to your statement regarding "everything rural vs. dirty cesspool." Perhaps it's different in Virginia, but as a broad generalization, I've always found those two to be basically the same thing, and to have little bearing on political alignment.

Eg: Alabama is a dirty, rural cesspool which votes predominantly republican because guns-n-Jesus, whereas New York (except for NYC / Westchester-Rockland / LI) is a dirty rural cesspool where everyone votes democrat because welfare and spiteful jealously of people in NYC / Westchester-Rockland / LI who have jobs.

 

if there were no major cities in any state, all states would be red. the end.

 

Can't argue about the statement but that maps pretty fucked up. Fact is geography doesn't vote people do. So it doesn't really matter the red/blue unless it only showed the voters as colored dots to show party/density.

This is not entirely false, and not entirely true.

Well, I take that back. It's entirely false since you made it an absolute statement. But you know what I mean.

Here was the 2010 governor's race in NY:



See that big red area on the left? That's where Buffalo / Niagara / Lockport / Batavia / etc are. Buffalo, in particular, is the 2nd largest city in NYS. Not quite as guns-n-Jesus as the southeastern US, but still pretty conservative

The blue area encompasses a few other large cities, but it also encompasses nearly all of the "welfare-n-meth" territory, which spans everything from failed resort towns that used to be popular in the 70s, to the apple orchards for which our state is famous, all the way down to towns that just don't seem to have any reason for existing other than the fact that that's where the ox died as some pioneer family was travelling west during the early 1800s, so they figured "Well, might as well build a town."


Point remains: take away NYC, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany, and it's still a very blue state.
