What are some of the other tried and true seat fitments into the NA?

Im 6'2" and would like something as far gack as the cage will allow.

Im gonna try some of the Sparco seats mentioned above, but any feedback is helpful of course.

I use the Kirkey 41 Series and I like them quite a lot. They are much more comfortable than they look and far more comfortable than many (all that I've tried) fiberglass seats.

 

The ultrashield spec miata is very similar to that kirkey but with a much better harness hole design, which you'll probably need at 6'2". I'm 6'1" and the ultrashield works great for me, and it's also pretty comfortable.

I'm 28" before head/neck restraint, and I've only found a handful of seats with shoulder belt holes high enough for me. Cobra and OMP are the best I've found in the fiberglass seats. If you're around 27" or less you'll have a lot more options, but you should still measure carefully if you decide on a seat with narrow belt holes like a Recaro or the kirkey above.

 

Do any of the full containment or head bolster type seats fit?

 

It all depends on your cage. Almost any seat will fit if you cut out the factory mounts, notch the transmission tunnel, and build the cage around the seat. Starting with a car that's already caged means you might have to do some trial and error before finding something that fits both you and the car.

I had a really tough time finding a seat to work with my cage. I was never a fan of aluminum seats, so I bought and sold (and lost money on) 3 or 4 fiberglass seats before finally saying screw it and ordering an ultrashield spec miata. It was the first seat that got me far enough back to be comfortable, but even with it bolted straight to the floor my helmet was still banging on the bar above the side window.

I just bought the same Tillett seat that Alec posted at the bottom of that page and I'm finally comfortable in a caged miata for the first time ever. It wasn't cheap but I have no regrets. I don't even need to notch the trans tunnel to get it centered and on the floor in my new NB.

Just had visions of the supernationals in Vegas

 

I'm not running a full cage, just rollbar and door bars. The smaller shoulder holes don't seem to create any issues with the 3in shoulder belts. I may drop down to 2in shoulder belts when these age out and I replace them just because HANS works with 2in. So, if HANS and the Kirkey work best with 2in shoulder belts, I won't fight the system next time. But the 3in work fine with the Kirkey. All of the holes have smooth rounded edges so as not to cut the belts or strain them.

 

for those running aluminum seats i strongly encourage the kirkey 47 road racing seat. they do fit in a miata and will give you the upper body support in a crash. AKA less broken ribs.

I have a 15" that fits with clearance (and no hammer modification). It's very comfortable and has great support. I have it mounted about 0.5" off the floor pan, it may have room to go a hair lower with removal of the rear seat mount, but definitely could get lower with that removed. I'm 5'10, with a tall torso, and fit under my roll bar (HDHCHTDDM2) with ease.

 

Mine's a 16 and fits with room to spare. A 17 should fit without issue if needed.

 

Is anyone running a Momo Daytona? I just saw one in a Miata at VIR a few weekend ago and the price is pretty nice for a halo seat.

Size wise it looks fairly comparable to a Momo Start which is what I run now, it's a touch wide in the hips for me but the shoulders are good.

I ended up buying a Lesmo One from Jegs since they have insane prices on Momo seats at the moment. It must be old stock or something, because they are like $150-$200 cheaper than everyone. Free shipping as well.

 

We where looking into carrying the entire momo line ( we only have the wheels right now). but we got reports back from drivers that the momo's where "flimsy" and liked to move around.

you can compare it's movement to a Sparco Pro ADV (my car)

the ADV is much more solid and much less movement. this will give you a better feel of your car's handling.

 

I'm 6'2" 235lbs. We are running a Sparco Ergo (Medium). The seat is bolted to the floor. We hammered the floor slightly toward the rear of the seat to get the seat even lower and still have a slight rake. Its as far back as my cage allows. We also notched the trans tunnel to get the seat centered on the wheel.

 

I'll concede that, but it's also 50% more expensive. I'll post some video from my next race to show how much this model moves around, it felt pretty solid while I was mounting it to the car.

That said, the Lesmo One is a seat strictly for tiny people. With a 30" waist and 5'6" 145lbs I fit in it nicely. I think 32-33" waists would be a fairly hard upper bound. It fits extremely easily in the Miata, I didn't need to massage the trans tunnel and I have a good 1/2-3/4" of clearance to the door.

I believe that seat is too wide at the shoulders. Measure your car from the center line at shoulder height and compare to their measurements.

 

Yes, but by that metric so is every other Sparco seat, except the Sprint V. I have the sprint V's on custom floor mounts and I took the covers off to bend the shoulders out about 3/4" per side. It just barely fits. I realize the Grid would be wider still, and I would either need to cut the tunnel and/or trim the seat, which I am willing to do if it means I can get a comfortable seat!

 

I don't think you are understanding what I am saying. You can determine the fit by measuring where the center line is (compared to the steering wheel) and then measuring out from there to see if the it will fit within the car. Modifying the transmission tunnel is a given with any seat this size.

 

almost all fia seats will need you to modify your car to get them in. the only seat i've seen built in with out the need of a hammer is the SPARCO REV. the rest will need you to take a hammer to the trans tunnel.

 

Again, my post has nothing to do with modifying the trans tunnel. That should be assumed for almost any seat install.
