You want the larger, fiber-reinforced disks, and yeah, you have to go at it from multiple angles, but it works well. That's what I used for all the -10 steel lines on my car.
I haven't used the SuperMiata one specifically, but with the ATI there's this little dance. IIRC the damper and crank timing pulley are one piece (well, bolted together, but they need to be assembled before they go on), so you have to start the damper, slide the belt in through the bottom, then put the lower timing cover on and bolt it down before driving the damper on the rest of the way. Water pump has to go on first, because part of it is underneath the timing cover, and if you screw something up and need to take the water pump off again it sucks.
I don't remember exactly what happened, but I wound up having to mangle some of the timing cover bits to get the water pump back off after I'd put the ATI on once.
I can't remember if I had to remove my crank or idler pulley to get the cover back on, I think it was the crank pulley. But mine was a stock pulley so...
Cant speak for the super miata damper. But with my ATI, i could not get the lower timing cover over it and the timing wheel. I ended up trimming the plastic (per FMs instructions) with wire cutters and a razor blade until i was able to wrestle it on.
Really? how did he get the bolts out of the thing belt guide? wouldn't he need a new one of those too?
Maybe the bolts backed out? Or he had a new guide. I don't remember. He drove the rest of the day and the 1000 miles back to oregon.
