Ok so this is gonna be my update of the good the bad and the indifferent. I had the car running good on 17psi but we all know that is not enough. The new turbo is on and it is a Borg Warner S256 it spools super fast and pulls hard. After doing some testing we thought we ran out of turbine at around 19 psi. This was not the case, my exhaust was causing major issues. You can see in one of the pics the tip of my exhaust was blue witch means all 5 feet of my exhaust was glowing blue. We removed the exhaust and boom it was a whole new animal. It spooled faster and pulled harder problem we tried to make a couple pulls on the highway and it kept blowing the charge pipe off. So I made a bracket to hold on the charge pipe. Boom the car hauled like no other. Then later that day we were adjusting the boost controller and the car hit 40 psi. This burned the ground strap off of 4 out of 6 spark plugs and cracked the ceramic in all 6. Well with no ground strap the ceramic fell into the motor good news is I chipped one valve bad news is I chipped one valve. We made a couple more pulls with a bad valve and took it home to be taken apart. It is currently apart and it was only one valve that had an issue everything else looks good just need to put the new valve in it. I have a set of head studs I am going to be putting in as well as timing belt seals and a new oil pump. I am putting an oil pump in because I think the one on the engine is just old and worn out. It takes too long to build oil pressure and for the $100 I would rather be safe than sorry.

Overall the car runs fantastic on methanol and the methanol injection works perfect being controlled by my FIC. the car pulls hard and had it not chipped a valve I would be driving it today. I tried to take a few vids with my GoPro and failed but I will get some soon.

Here is a horrible video from a dig on the highway a few nights ago this was on 15 psi. You cant see much but you get the idea.

Locust I passed on the way to work last week he waived.

Methanol system the led lights up when the pump is on and the button is a manual perge.

Brand new Borg Warner S256 and comparison to my old turbo

Home made Harbor Freight boost controller!! Works great now that it is adjusted

New charge pipe brace

Exhaust tip from getting too hot.

Then this is what I did on sunday :(

Sunday morning

three hours later

The damage

Is that an intake valve (that chipped)? Should I be able to tell that from just looking at it?

Yes, not only the deposits on it, more obvious is that intake valves are always larger.

Thanks Dann. I also just realized that it makes absolutely no sense for an intake valve to chip from a crumbled spark plug.

I got the car all torn apart I took the time to pressure wash the head and re lap all the valves and replace all the valve seals. I have the head back together now so as soon as the rest of the parts in I will be putting the engine back together. I am putting in a new oil pump timing belt tensioner spark plugs cam and crank seals everything I think should be replaced since I am in there. Here are a few pics of my head going back together and all cleaned up. I wanted to hot tank it but my friends steam cleaning machine is broken right now so wheel cleaner and a pressure washer is what I got and it worked pretty well.

Springs and buckets all organized in an empty tool box drawer

Organizing all the valves before lapping

Everything cleaned and lapped going back together

All back together ready to go back on the car

So did you buy a new valve to replace the cracked one? Can you get just one? I didn't see any new looking valves. I assume at this point it could go back together now, but those parts you are waiting on are preventative measures?

I actually got two used valves from a local guy. I only needed one but I bought two just in case I saw any other ones that looked questionable. The only part that is holding me up is the oil pump. I could put the head on the block but I would rather just wait to get that installed and do it all at once.

Ok so minor update. I was working on the car tonight I figured I would get a jump start for tomorrow I started to take the oil pump off to replace it when I figured out that you have to remove the oil pan to get it off lucky for me to get the oil pan off a 2j in a miata you have to remove the engine. FAIL. So tomorrow I will be taking the engine out. Not a big deal since everything is apart already. Also I was thinking of painting my engine bay while the engine was out. I am not sure on a color yet I may stick with the stock red or I may change it to white I like white to see leaks but the another choice would be black. I am not sure yet but if anyone has any input on engine bay color please add. I will post up some pics later my computer is being slow right now.

Don't paint anything white in engine bay. It will become any color except white. I went with silver and I still like it.

Ok so I spent all day saturday removing my engine and trans cleaning it and installing the oil pump, upper and lower oil pans, and transmission output shaft seal. I am hoping to rid myself of any leaks I am sure some more will come along but for now the engine should be leak free. Sunday I put the engine back together the headstuds are in head it on intake timing belt crank and cam seals. Bassically everything I could think of that may leak I tried to prevent it. I did not finish because I am currently trying to make a nice cover for my distributor and I had to go pick up the bigger exhaust housing for my turbo. I should have all this installed tonight. I am going for a .88ar housing to a 1.22ar housing. The car seemed to be running out of turbine it the top of 3rd last time we tuned it so this should remede the problems. Here are a few pics of the process. I should be taking it for a drive tomorrow!!!!!!!! So glad its back together.
