Found pictures of soviets drain. Just a male AN10 fitting. With a simple fitting. No fancy 45* needed. I'll probably do that.

Picked up a belt/disc sander today. Will work well for building manifolds.

 

IMHO, you really want to put an NPT bung in the pan and then thread the AN fitting into that, that way the flare surface is easy to replace if it gets damaged. The reason for the 45 is that if you do that with a straight fitting, then the hose hits the subframe because there isn't enough room laterally. There's also several inches of drain hose/fitting with no slope in that one.



Also, that hole is too far forwards if you're going to have AC or PS in the car.

That pan was just for testing. Its an MSM pan so I couldn't put the fitting where I wanted to anyways.

 

Got a good start on my catch can. I'll probably start welding it up tonight.






It will have 2 -10AN inlets on one side, (block, and exhaust side of valve cover). And a 3/8 filter on the other side. Wall down the middle filled with bronze scrubby.

​1/4npt petcock drain on the bottom.

 

I'd rather have the AN fitting right on the pan to avoid the restriction in the drain line from the npt adapter. The same reason you want to use the flange adapter on the turbo.

 

And for the welding. I'm finally getting to the point where I'm not embarrassed by my aluminum welding. It still needs work. Shoutout to @ryansmoneypit for the handholding and advice throughout.

Start with some practice.




Weld the sides







Chop the top off because its too tall



And weld in the baffle and bolt bits.




Fill with water. And weld all the leaks up



Next stop is the machine shop to mill the top flat. Build a lid.

Then weld in the following:

2 -10AN bungs (Block vent and valve cover)
1 3/8 NPT bung (Big filter vent to atmo)
1 1/4 NPT bung (petcock for draining)

Then it will be set aside until I figure out where it is getting mounted

 

Nice work, definite improvement. Ryan and I were discussing bringing his intercooler mounts to you for welding. Kris is leaving for a few weeks soon...

If all i have to do is lay beads, then its super easy. The cutting and fitting is the part that sucks.

These are new pedals. They cover the old ones. Bigger gas pedal, slightly bigger clutch and brake.

Thats only the driveway. Heres the backyard. We got incredibly lucky with this place, great landlord, good price, and awesome garage.

And ryan stopped by for some aluminum welding. Not my prettiest work, but it should hold. Aluminum is a tossup for me. I also think I need thicker tungsten for this. 3/32nds has been great for almost everything but it was blowing out when I tried to crank the power on this.

 

Got a **** ton done again. Mockup motor is in. Going to be building the manifold, downpipe, intercooler piping, and maybe even the T5 swap around this car. Ed's old head, my crappy block.

Pretty excited. Its on casters, so I can move it around as much as I want and stuff.

 

I'm actually losing a lot of my storage area so that picture makes me especially jealous

 

Although I would love to take credit for that welding, I'm going to let you have it. Tell people you did it.

This was day's ago so I assume you're already done, but I hope you used a bandsaw and a belt sander to flatten the top of that. I hate edge milling thin, hardly supported materials.

 

Yep milled it. Work ok. Dont have belts for my sander yet. I have pics but am currently driving in the middle of ******* nowhere.

We got a brand new Passat rental. Radar cruise and everything. The leg room in this thing is everything. Got another 200 miles to go while hailey sleeps. Interview is in 7 hours.

 

The best thing about working at the machine shop is the multitude of 30+ year machinists. So when I start ******* **** up they come over and show me the real way to do to. We used jack screws between the baffle and sides, and put a big hunk of modeling clay on the outside. It helped a lot with stabalizing.
