The Current Events, News, and Politics Thread
Sorry if I gave that impression, but what else is there to discuss?
1: There is strong evidence that mRNA vaccines are effective at preventing serious illness from whatever virus they are designed to combat.
2: There is strong evidence that elected officials are exploiting the present situation to increase the power of government.
3: Point #2 above has successfully steered public attention in the direction intended by said officials.
4: Judging by appearances, people who strongly self-identify as either liberal or conservative are acting in an even more exaggerated than usual fashion in the manners with which these affiliations are stereotypically associated.
Is anyone credibly denying any of these things? Unless you're Braineack, there's no point in debating / arguing things which nobody is arguing against.

I get it if you think this is all a joke or completely out of our hands. But if it's not, are you prepared to do....anything? In a tiny act of defiance, would you walk into the DMV without your mask on? Send a letter to your local paper? Chuckle and move onto your next satellite dish adventure? No wrong answer...

Once I got to the counter, they politely asked me to put a mask on, so I did.
I go maskless 100% of the time when I am outside of the "public areas" of my workplace, as that's the presently-extant rule at the TV station.
Granted, the number of other places I visit isn't large, but include grocery shopping, Target, home-buying, Sears, Hancock, and pretty much anywhere else in which the owner or party responsible for that location has not specifically required that I wear a mask in order to enter their premises. Chicago still requires masks when on public transit, so I carry and wear one on those occasions.
Joke isn't the word I'd use. I do think it's kind of a farce insofar as how extreme the reactions have been from people who are at the extreme ends of the Rep vs. Dem spectrum. In this case, that would be those who are hysterically anti-mask / anti-vax, as well as those who are hysterically pro-panic / pro-compliance.
Here is a selfie which I took at the DMV, without a mask, on June 4 of this year:

The CDC mouthpiece announced today they are recommending pregnant women and nursing women get vaccinated. There cannot possibly be enough evidence to support that.
It is getting increasingly hard for me to believe the governments have their citizen's best interests at heart. Three weeks or so ago Jen Psaki stated she gets Covid tested twice a week, and the Whitehouse staff all get tested regularly. Given their language before the election about a "Trump vaccine", the current behavior makes more sense if I believe they didn't get vaccinated because they know something.

Also, I failed to address that post earlier.
I am massively aroused by her. Both sexually and intellectually.
Doesn't hurt that she's also a first-generation American, of Cuban heritage.
In 100% seriousness, I have never met anyone who appreciated the US, had a broader and more well-informed perspective on the state of socio-political affairs of the world (and how they compare to those of the US), and was just generally more well-grounded in reality, than a legal immigrant to the US from a Communist or otherwise Fascist country. With the caveat that I do not count China as a truly communist country. Think more Vietnam / Laos / N. Korea.
Their children, of whom I am one, are a distant second.
It sort of falls apart in the subsequent generation. Too much distance from the source.

but by all means take an experimental vaccine you don't need unless you're 50+, that's known to cause heart complications and miscarriages*.
*Since the NIH just released findings the show that 81% of women taking the "vaccine" in the first or second trimester of a pregnancy, end up losing their babies to miscarriage. (104 of 127 women)
Can we stop saying "the vaccine?" To me, that is disingenuous. It's the Johnson & Johnson vaccine that caused blood clots in what, 14 women? The Moderna vaccine is showing to to have more efficacy after 6 months than the Pfizer vaccine. This shows it's clear that are very large differences between all the mRNA vaccines. I've been vaccinated with the Pfizer vaccine, mainly because my fiancé is immune compromised and I already saw how nasty it was to her when she caught it last year. My only side effect was a sore arm, and strangely, an insatiable appetite.
I'm like Joe, I don't wear mask unless I'm somewhere that requires it. We've going out to eat, to comedy shows, etc, since summer of last year (she didn't catch that way, but from the ******** at her work that wouldn't stay home when sick). It's really not a big deal and I don't see it as some infringement on "muh rights." Do you also think it's an infringement on someone's rights when a business puts up a sign that says, "No shirt. No shoes. No service."
If you EVER believed that, I'm sure what to say to you. This country was founded on protecting wealthy landowners and it's been that ever since.

Among adults aged 65–74 years, effectiveness of full vaccination for preventing hospitalization was 96% for Pfizer-BioNTech, 96% for Moderna, and 84% for Janssen COVID-19 vaccines; among adults aged ≥75 years, effectiveness of full vaccination for preventing hospitalization was 91% for Pfizer-BioNTech, 96% for Moderna, and 85% for Janssen COVID-19 vaccines.
and just in time for that nasty outbreak the vaccine protects you against!

then you have these studies:
https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1...707v1.full.pdf
this studies suggests Moderna is 76% effective against Delta, where Pfizer is only 42%...
just gotta get that extra booster of the vaccine that doesn't work, to protect you against the strain it doesnt work against.
But even at at 50% population vaxed, with a 40% efficient vaccine, we should see huge drop in numbers from last summer -- but alas, those pesky stubborn people with PHDs, not getting the vax, ruining it for all of us
https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1...707v1.full.pdf
Here we compare the effectiveness of two full-length Spike protein-encoding mRNA vaccines from Moderna (mRNA-1273) and Pfizer/BioNTech (BNT162b2) in the Mayo Clinic Health System over time from January to July 2021, during which either the Alpha or Delta variant was highly prevalent. We defined cohorts of vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals from Minnesota (n = 25,589 each) matched on age, sex, race, history of prior SARS-CoV-2 PCR testing, and date of full vaccination. Both vaccines were highly effective during this study period against SARS-CoV-2 infection (mRNA-1273: 86%, 95%CI: 81-90.6%; BNT162b2: 76%, 95%CI: 69-81%) and COVID-19 associated hospitalization (mRNA-1273: 91.6%, 95% CI: 81-97%; BNT162b2: 85%, 95% CI: 73-93%). However, in July, the effectiveness against infection was considerably lower for mRNA-1273 (76%, 95% CI: 58-87%) with an even more pronounced reduction in effectiveness for BNT162b2 (42%, 95% CI: 13-62%). Notably, the Delta variant prevalence in Minnesota increased from 0.7% in May to over 70% in July whereas the Alpha variant prevalence decreased from 85% to 13% over the same time period.

If there's ever a reason to think this is all a racket....well there are SEVERAL reasons....it's right now. The flip-flopping of the CDC and the WHO to start. The fact that we're using PCR tests that cycle enough to give A LOT of false positives. My 89 y/o dad was tested twice, three weeks apart, and was positive both times. No symptoms. He was then tested two weeks after that with an antigen (much more accurate) test which found that he never had Covid. But of course to positive tests went towards California's Covid totals.
Most of all lately for me is the fact that the media is being so selective with their news. Anyone hear about Cuba lately? Not much. If we're sticking with Covid, has anyone heard about all of the preventatives that are being used all over the world, such as Ivermectin (cheap!), Hydrochloroquine, zinc, vitamin C, vitamin D, Quercetin with Bromelain, etc.? These are proven to work and yet I keep being told that the "vaccine" (ht Braineak) is the ONLY way to protect myself, even though Harris and Biden at different times have said they wouldn't take it.
Shouldn't we be getting a daily beat-down from the media about taking prophylatics as well?

The gift that keeps on giving
Seriously….. the person responsible for Hunter Biden’s moral compass is now indirectly responsible for everybody in America - in particular the kids, who are generally under the gummint’s control for half the year. It will be more if NEA and company continue channeling Ceaucescu.

At least we can take solace knowing that the veep is probably worse.

+ for the wonderful reference to Nicolae Ceaușescu, whose haircut easily ranks among the worst five of all dictators of the 20th century.
My earlier DMV photo, followed by the Richard Nixon meme I made, have made me aware of the fact that my own hairline and hairstyle are uncomfortably similar to those of Nixon during his years in office, particularly when it's been a bit too long since my last trim.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do about this.
