I have been noticing a lot more police in the subway system than usual. And not just Chicago PD, but also Cook County Sherrif, who you almost never see in the city. I've witnessed them pull two people out of subway cars over the past week, both of whom resembled the usual suspects. Yesterday, it was a guy who had just entered the car at a stop and sat down next to me. The police followed him in and took him out, which was nice, as there was a certain aroma about him.

That having been said, Tommie Carter decided that he would spend part of this day this past Monday asking strangers for a dollar on the Blue Line platform at Harlem, which is on the way to O'Hare. A couple stops north of my house on a line I ride frequently.

Mr. Carter did not like it when an as-yet-unnamed 59 near old man declined to provide him with a dollar, so he threw the man onto the tracks as an oncoming train was approaching.

Fortunately, the sharp-eyed driver of the train noticed the man on the tracks, just a few inches from the third rail, and was able to stop the train in time. He then radioed dispatch request an emergency power-cut to the third rail in his section, after which the man was able to be rescued.

The victim broke both knees (something which I can *really* empathize with at the moment) but survived. Officers responded quickly, and took Mr. Carter into custody.
