Rather caucasian and somewhat light on population density and manufacturing, to my understanding. I have no idea how that correlates to anything. Trying to think of other things those three places have in common besides being cold but we have other states that are cold also.

In terms of overall violent crime rate (based on 2017 FBI data) the top 10 (with crimes / 100k) are:

Now, I'm going to look at the "Gun Law Scorecard ratings for each of those states. Note that these rankings are from the Giffords Law Center, which is a strongly anti-gun organization, so in their opinion, a "good" rating (A) correlates to highly restrictive gun laws, and a "poor" rating "F" correlates with states that do not severely limit gun rights.
• Maine: F (35th out of 50)
• Vermont: D+ (21st out of 50)
• New Hampshire: F (40th out of 50)
• Virginia: D (32nd out of 50)
• Kentucky: F (43rd out of 50)
• Idaho: F (48th out of 50)
• Connecticut: A- (3rd out of 50)

So, you're absolutely right if you look at only the top 5. But expand that to the top 10, and correlation totally vanishes. Three of the states with the most highly restrictive gun laws are in the top 10 states in which you are least likely to experience Murder, Rape, Robbery, or Aggravated Assault.
Kinda proves your point that you make time and time again. That if you cherry pick data you can swing any argument in your favor.

Hawaii, for instance, has the third-lowest firearm homicide rate in the US. It also has some of the most restrictive gun laws of any US state. And it is not cold.
Alaska has some of the most permissive gun laws of any US state, and it also has the #1* highest rate of death by firearm. And it's often quite cold.
* = or #2, depending on data source and year. It dances with Lousiana for the top spot. Which kind of doesn't matter, since Louisiana ALSO has extremely permissive gun laws, including unlicensed open and "shall-issue" concealed carry.
It's clear that having permissive gun laws, and a large number of guns, does not automatically equate to having low rates of violent crime. The states with the highest rates of violent crime also have the loosest gun laws and the highest percentages of gun-ownership. (And also poverty, drug abuse, ethnic diversity, etc.)

Now Brain I'm not doubting your data but you quoted "Of adults arrested for murder". Just because you were arrested for something doesn't mean you have been found guilty of it. Just sayin.
Also Hispanics make up 17% of the population yet only get arrested for some of the other 2.8% of murders? We must be really good at not getting caught because I know we do some murders. Or maybe when we get arrested for murder we claim to be white or black and not Hispanic just to throw off the FBI numbers.

That's certainly what I do when I get arrested for murder.
But, in all seriousness, Brain realizes that "arrested for murder" and "guilty of murder" are fundamentally interchangeable, because neither the police nor the DA's office ever make mistakes or deliberately fabricate evidence or testimony in order to frame innocent people. How could they? Both are arms of The Government, which is our benevolent and infallible protector.
