Vlad is it pretty typical for them to have that electrolysis looking corrosion on the coolant inlet and outlets? I noticed a similar condition on my FXT when I did the timing belt last month, and then again when replacing the radiator 2 weeks later after the top tank burst on the stocker. :vash:

Leafy 12-15-2016 10:55 PM

My old one had it. Had to switch to worm drive clamps to get it to seal.

18psi 12-17-2016 02:09 AM

I've seen plenty of it, on cars runing oem and non-oem fluid. so yeah

About how long does it take you to pull one of those out? I always hear that they're super easy.

18psi 12-19-2016 08:03 PM

4 hours. by myself with no help at all. I take my time, everything comes out perfectly: no scratches, stripped bolts, etc.
If I attacked it with an impact and a couple monster energy drinks like some of the backyard mechanics that often break stuff, I bet I can do it in an hour flat.

God damn! What the fuck was the turn around time on that?!

18psi 12-20-2016 01:54 PM

Dropped off Saturday at 1, picked up Monday at 3.
It helps that the shop I used is the same shop that does all of the local Subaru dealership's machine work ;)

hi_im_sean 12-20-2016 03:14 PM

117k, clutch is still going, I hope to get rid of the car before I have to pull the engine and do a clutch, and maybe an oil pickup if the motor hasnt grenaded by then....

What sort of services did you perform behind machine shop? fuking hell that's fast.

18psi 12-20-2016 05:50 PM

Clean, pressure test, vacuum test, machine/mill.
I've had a set completely rebuilt in the past with new guides, valve job, shim, machine, clean, the whole works from a competing machine shop. took a week.
the 2 machine shops I use are literally across the street from one another LOL

Its not that bad, just get an assortment of putty knives if this is the first time the engine and tranny have come apart. It only takes 4 hours to pull the motor unless those fucking dowel pins are corroded in and then it takes 4 hours to just get the tranny and engine apart, and then slather that fucker with anti-sieze for the next time you have to pull the motor to do basic maintenance.

slowly but surely this bad boy is coming back together.

All new ARP's, gaskets, seals, o-rings, copper washers, new TB/WP/Idlers...

I think we're gonna turn the boost down about 2psi and take out at least 2* of timing at peak load to keep these HG's happy.

On another note: if anyone wants a good condition used ARP stud kit for super cheap, holler at me.

Working on the EJ25 in Gesso's Forester was a lot of fun, just because it was so different. I haven't touched a horizontally opposed engine since probably the 90s when I had my bug.

So I'm going to order a replacement axle for the WRX. Any brands I should avoid?

Goddammit. I need to go look at the production date on the door jam tag :vash:

18psi 01-05-2017 02:07 PM

I've only dealt with OEM so not sure on other brands.
It's hilarious how many mid-year revisions Subaru has made to the different models. Basically need vin# for everything.

Random funny fact: for the 08 wrx, you cannot buy a new oem half shaft boot. At all. Even though it's the same rubber boot used on cars for decades

You can buy like 5 of the rockauto ones for that money lol

Honestly I'd give it a shot. For that price, even if it dies in a year it's still worth it.

I desperately, DESPERATELY wish someone would steal my BRZ and crash it into a pole at a high rate of speed.

Too bad my new place in OKC has secured parking. I have to start leaving it on the street with the fob in it and hope I get lucky.
