Easy, because they rob tons of HP from the crank. My whipple setup went from 350whp VD on a cold day at 30 PSI, to 370whp on a hot day at 22 PSI, IDENTICAL untouched tune, when I went from whipple to turbo. I'm probably 100whp over the whipple at the same boost level with a turbo and the same tune/same engine.

But the cobalt guys are over 350 at the wheels with e85. Nearly that much with 93 + meth.

Dunno, my guess is that engine breaths better (so less restriction for the SC to pull hp from the crankshaft to overcome) and FWD platform is more efficient at putting crank hp to the wheels. But I know nothing about cobalts really.

*Wait a tick Edlebrock did decide to go with the TVS1320, why the fuck arent these making 350hp on e85?

Let's see FWD vs RWD, comp ratio, CFM of the heads, oh and the all important amount of BOOST.

On the BRZ, Edelbrock has their stock pulley setup to make minimal boost on purpose. If you use their CARB tune, they will pay for any powertrain failures under the stock warranty. It's part of the marketing pitch for their setup since the rods in these engines are known to be a bit iffy. All the aftermarket rods (even fancy ones) are heavier than stock.

They claim with the smallest pulley on E85 it will flow enough for 500+ hp (I believe crank).

I was so compelled to just drive on the track...

shoulda

Braineack 04-19-2016 11:56 AM

there was an access gate wide open right there too...

there was actually a few benzes out on the track. there was a huge s-class.

z31maniac 04-19-2016 12:11 PM

I'd love to drive that track. I've done hundreds and hundreds of laps on in it in iRacing.

Braineack 04-19-2016 02:33 PM

I also don't want my DD to end up like this:

EO2K 04-19-2016 02:35 PM

Pah! That's driveable.

Braineack 04-19-2016 02:39 PM

true, but it's not as pretty.

I think that was an HPDE 3. dude got a little squirrelly, tail end went around him, and he basically ended up on the grass, then slide along a tire wall.

will buff right out

My coworker's son has a turbo FRS that my coworker sometimes borrows. He told me he was having some problems with it (felt low on power) and told me to have a look since of the 50 or so techs at my dealer I'm the only one that seems to know anything at all about forced induction. Sidenote: I work with all these "Toyota master diagnostic technicians" but if Toyota turbocharges a car from the factory anytime soon, all these guys are fucked.

Holy shit. I have never seen anything scarier.
I asked him where the kit was from and he had no idea. It uses some sort of larger garrett turbo, which from what I could tell is of the GTX variety but I'm not good at naming garretts off looks alone.
He had no boost gauge, no wideband of any kind, flashed some "map" that came with the kit. No extra gauges, or anyway of knowing what the engine was doing.
It was an EWG setup with a tial 38mm, so that was cool, except it was dumped to atmosphere and he had already been pulled over for it since this is the great state of california. The dump tube ended right at the under engine cover though, and was starting to melt it. He had no idea what spring was in there either.
The BOV vacuum line was connected to the intake manifold, and if my memory serves me correctly thats supposed to be hooked up pre TB (at least it was on my Miata). He said this was what the instructions said to do, the intake piping didn't even have a fitting for the hose so I assume he wasn't lying about the instructions. The oil and coolant lines were kinked and rubbing on stuff.
I asked him about extra fueling and he said "didn't come with any". I don't know if the stock fueling system which is made more complicated with DI can handle FI so can't say much here.

He let me drive it around the block and it sounded like it was trying to make boost but couldn't. Almost like it was running out of gas. And of course when I let off the gas I got nothing but compressor surge from what I suspect is an incorrectly connected BOV.

I pulled it back into the shop and told him "take this home and don't drive it until you plumb it correctly and get it tuned. In fact you should probably tow this thing home"

Stay tuned for the next episode of "people who know nothing about forced induction slapping unknown turbo kits on their cars"

Edit: apparently buying an LC1 and a boost gauge were options when he bought the kit, but they opted out of it. Oh boy.

sounds like a real winner tho

Srs. We know you took them

If you think BOV vacuum line is supposed to go before the throttle body and never see vacuum then you don't understand how they work.

Mine worked perfectly being hooked up like that, and his was completely inop. Maybe some of them work differently. Not a bov expert honestly.

Unfortunately I didn't take any. Maybe when he drives it to work again, if it doesn't blow up on the way here.
