You're not a good person if you don't.

Does anyone have a spec for side to side valve stem play?

So, no side to side play, like a few 10,000ths, but they should slide open and closed easily. It's usually done by feel, I think.

I assumed the answer was "none", but was hoping for a number to measure. My latest theory is hogged out valve guides with wobbly valves, which would cause seals to leak like crazy while running, but probably not weep while sitting.

I mean, the old school engine builders I knew laughed at valve stem seals. But that was long ago.

Pretty much the same AFAIK.

So how much side-to-side play are you able to actually measure? Is this just theoretical or have you actually touched the motor yet?

Theoretical. I can measure whatever my dial indicator measures.

Old school engine builders didn't have overhead cams bathed in oil

Just make sure you can't feel any slop and that they don't bind.

Yes they did, and I am twice as old as you.

Alright well maybe I'll try and measure this week and see what happens.

That is exactly what Andrew has claimed to be the cause of the reports on problems with valve seals... improper preparation of valve guides.

Talking with him at dinner at MRLS is what spurred all this. Its my last ditch hope that the bottom end of the motor is fine and its all in the head.

The weather has been nice. Actually getting a little bit of motivation back to work on the car. Also, wife started work, so were no longer single income.

I still haven't drained the oil after the MRLS running out of oil fiasco, so if the oil comes out shiny and full of sparkles I'm shelving the car for a while, no time/money/motivation. But if oil looks good, im going to work on it a bit. Goal is to get it running for a Tour event at packwood. Going to go see how bad I get beat by real SSM cars.

Oh, wife now, she is. How was the wedding? Was a helicopter involved... running from memory here.

Congratulations.

Lol. Long story, but my grandpa went on hospice about a month ago, so we planned a family wedding in a week. Went very well. Still have a big wedding planned in august, but it happened already.

I have yet to be able to convince @hornetball to hook up a jet flyover at my wedding. Maybe I can hold some parts hostage from his next sadfab order....
