Finally saw the catfish in person at Cars and Coffee. It looks amazing in person. Makes me want to start saving up for one even more now.

 

Here's a video from Saturday's Streets of Willow twilight session. It was 100 when I arrived, and about 82 when I left at 11pm. Hawt.

So I guess I don't need to tell you guys that an oil breather is required on the valve cover when using a turbo. We were also getting some fuel starvation with over half a tank of gas. More work ahead...

Noted. In my defense, it's a small diameter wheel and I tend to grab it wherever I can get the best leverage. I've got a Momo Mod88 on order.

As for heel and toe, I should have something to help me with that by the time Laguna Seca rolls around. BTW, my name ain't Emilio...I design better than I drive.

 

I'm no driving god, don't get me wrong on that count. You're quite...abrupt, with your steering inputs, smooth is best, make each corner flow.

You shouldn't be seeing fuel starvation with a half tank. Be sure your fuel sock isn't 180* out. I had a similar issue on track with hair pin left turns and that's what it was.
That is, of course, assuming you're using the oem tank

Ahhh, now I have a place to start. I was surprised that there was starvation with the OEM tank as it was reading over a 1/2 tank, but as the sessions progressed, the hiccup at the top of the straightaway (sharp left) and bowl (sharp left) turned into a hiccup in a few more of the corners. Mostly lefts, though.

 

One more point that became clear this weekend...we were seeing black smoke during the dyno session and I put it down to a rich prior tune. It now seems that the pressurized valve cover was pushing the blow-by oil through the PCV valve and back into the engine. We should be fine when a new breather tank is installed, but that's one mystery solved.

Hopefully the fuel sock is the other part of the mystery. I'm still running the stock 1.6 fuel pump, and it seems like I might want to upgrade that as long as I'm in there.

Long story short: Emilio said that the NB tank with NA pickup unit (franken-tank) was causing our problems. He said that if the sock is not in its original position (usually you can see a smooth area from rubbing) it can cause starvation. If you have a pinhole in the boot, starvation. If the return line plastic hose isn't pointed back to the sock, starvation. We were missing our return line hose...

To back up our bad tank/pickup situation, we had an NA fuel regulator (approx. 41lbs pressure) and the same vintage fuel pump. We're replacing that with an NB pressure regulator (55-ish lbs pressure) along with a new 255LPB HP Walbro, picked up at 949Racing. They were hungry and ready to go to a late lunch. He essentially dropped the stuff in my hands and said, "Go away. I'll send you a bill later." Worth it.

 

That wasn't that bad... on another note, when I was screwing around with my sock issue, I added a poly tube inside the sock (connected to pump) to get me maybe 2" more in tank depth. Did it work? Maybe, maybe just a waste of my time.

 

Order some fuel cell foam while you are at it and add it in there while it is open!

I've got a freshened 1.8 engine waiting for me in San Diego. Now I just need a new Catfish to put it in. The question now is, what style should I build? Time Attack or classic roadster?

 

When are you gonna get a top for that thing? I can't be the only one waiting to pull the trigger once the car can be brought out in less then perfect conditions.

 

Well in order to have a top, you first need a windscreen. We already have customers who have ordered the windscreens, and we're actually working on the first cars now. Right now it's a 14" tall screen that will have the frame almost entirely behind the glass. This will give the front a really clean and uncluttered look.

The first step after the screen is a bikini-style top. Then hard top. Essentially we had a customer that said "Yes, I want to be a guinea pig for the first windscreen and since you'll be charging me a fraction of the retail cost to be first, I'm a happy camper."

Now who is going to be first to order an LS-based Catfish?

 

Would a Catfish V8 swap be any cheaper than a normal V8 swap? ie are of the same components required (all of the stuff FM sells)?

I'm much more interested in the full windscreen and bikini top though for the record. Those are necessary items to convince the boss that it's still a "practical" car.
