It is truly bizarre how many different people, all of whom are known to me personally and are literate, intelligent individuals with professional careers in a wide variety of fields, seem to genuinely believe that US citizens are being snatched out of their homes and sent to foreign prisons.
We truly do live in a post-truth society.
