I have always said that a 250-270 whp BRZ/FRS would be one of the best cars ever. Would be perfectly balanced but an absolute riot to drive. 'specially if it's smooth power like rotrex or something like that.

Yep, and that seems to be about the limit for a well tuned car to stay pretty reliable.

The big problem seems to be the rods. These cars have tiny, tiny cute little rods that snap and window the block.

Started smelling and seeing smoke from the turbo area on my 02 bugeye. Turns out the inner cv boot is cracked and spilled its guts. I am thinking about rebuilding it. Any thoughts or experience with rebuilding vs rebuilt vs empi?

18psi Jul 10, 2016 07:16 PM

done it. nothing terribly hard. I suggest getting the "kit" from one of the vendors, comes with grease and the right boot (don't even try the auto parts stores, they are beyond dumb and the likelihood of getting you the right boot will be 1 in 999999999999999)

I think it was fastwrx or some place like that.

can confirm. at least 3-4 times a week they get me the wrong parts.

Any thoughts on the new manufacture cardone select or empire brand (empi) that rock auto carries? My plan would be to install one of those and keep the oem axle. Then i could rebuild the oem at my leisure and have as a back up since the axles are the same both sides.

MartinezA92 Jul 11, 2016 11:49 PM

I never want to do a clutch on a subaru ever again.

and now my axle seal is leaking so theres that.

18psi Jul 12, 2016 12:55 AM

lol bring them to me :)

EO2K Jul 12, 2016 11:26 AM

How long does it take you to do a clutch? Do you accept beer as a form of payment? :giggle:

18psi Jul 12, 2016 11:35 AM

I want to say yes so bad, but I'd put on 200lb minimum if I did that. lulz
the fastest we've done it in is 2 hours. On average it's 4 hours. it really depends on what year and how much rust/corrosion the car has.

stratosteve Jul 12, 2016 11:35 AM

Cv axle came out stoopid easy. Roll pin only required tapping. I disconnected the lca at the lower ball joint. New boots arrive tomorrow. Paging jeffbucc to clean axle grease that is ALLOVERIT.

Jesus, i spent 2 hours alone trying to separate the engine and transmission. dowel pins became rust.
Its a CA car too and nothing else is rusty, I was not expecting to fight it for that long.

EO2K Jul 12, 2016 07:57 PM

The struggle is real. I helped Gesso with his Forester and it was absolutely silly. Make sure you clean those pins and anti-seize the shit out of them before it goes back together. Its like, not even an option not to do it.

18psi Jul 12, 2016 08:00 PM

Yeah the rusted ones we usually hit with sand paper to remove corrosion, then lube up

Same here, heat and prying on mine. I cleaned the corrosion off and then anti seized the living shit out of it. Which is nice because I'm going to have to pull the motor once I can push the red miata out of the garage to do the valve cover gaskets. So that'll be a piece of cake.

Hint for working on rusty shit from someone who has to do it all the time:

If the ends of a bolt are exposed, hit them with a acid brush full of naval jelly. Let sit overnight. Spray with penetrating oil (homemade 50:50 acetone/ATF works best) and remove.

Drove a 2015 BRZ Limited last night. Felt much quicker than the last one I drove (both stock), maybe because more miles and maybe because fully warmed up.

I still think they are really sexy, and absolutely love the interior too.

Will probably pick one up after the MSM as a "Miata replacement" or something. Will need boost tho. I can't live my life with so little torque.

z31maniac Jul 22, 2016 10:22 AM

Jackson Racing Supercharger + High Boost Pulley and E85 = 375ish whp. I keep debating doing a mild turbo setup to keep it under 300whp. But as I mentioned a few months ago, if I end up moving in with this chick I'm seeing, my commute goes from 34 miles per day, to ~105 miles per day. So I wouldn't do that in a coilover'd with solid mounts BRZ on 35 series 18s. And I don't want to put that kind of miles on it, so I'd be looking to pick an early low-mileage-ish import (camry/corolla/etc) to hammer miles on and leave the BRZ as a weekend/fun car.

If things go south with her before the end of the year, boost or a faster car to start with will happen.

EO2K Jul 22, 2016 11:51 AM

I will admit to being uncomfortably attracted to the BRZZZZ.
